Laundry Washing Machine Front Loader Preferred (Can Be Second-Hand Just Need a New Working One Asap)

Old Fisher and Paykel smart drive 053 top loading washing machine died last night or won't respond so am now looking for one asap before the laundry piles up.

It turns on as normal and settings or buttons can still be pressed and changed but nothing happens when hitting start or anything so trying to diagnose it while also looking for standby options in case we need a new one.

Anyways if it was my choice I would have bought a front loader as I have heard how much more better they are efficiency wise and cleaning wise.

Countless laundry detergent studies show how much more effective front loader machines have better cleaning capabilities over top loaders so this is a good thing maybe a blessing in disguise.

Anyways since this is my first time shopping for a washing machine I thought to ask some seasoned veterans and pros to chime in and maybe ask for advice and help in getting a new washing machine installed or repairing the old one (Fisher and Paykel Smart Drive 053).

This is a quick post so will post more information as I get them.

Located in Katoomba Blue Mountains NSW 2780.

Currently searching eBay and gumtree and some other department appliance stores.

This is my same exact model (albeit a bit more worn out on the buttons) but thankfully it's not making the same sounds as in the video yet just not starting the wash cycle.

  • I'll be switching to a German-made Bosch front loader when my current one dies altogether. Probably from Appliances Online.

    • Thanks holdenmg this is currently now on top of my list unless I can find a cheaper one on eBay or gumtree.

      • I bought this exact one from JBHifi last weekend for $398.
No complaints, seems to work pretty well. I'm happy with it.

Might need to pull the trigger on it soon though, if you want it.
From memory, I think it is a catalogue special which finishes in the next day or two maybe.

        • Yeah deciding right now if I need it.. as the current machine only broke down recently so it might decide to fix itself by tomorrow who knows.. still turning on just not starting.

      • JB don't deliver to your location. You should confirm this with a phone call.
You may have to take a trip to Penrith area or get a courier to deliver it.

  • I'd buy a cheap one off gumtree and then research higher end models.

    BOSH and Miele are excellent

Fisher and Paykel are utter shithouse.

The Simpson machine above gets a pretty good review on Choice.

  • It all depends on how much you're looking to spend. We purchased a new Bosch WAW32640AU (German made) last year and have been very happy with it, so much so that we purchased a 2nd unit last week (from JB for $1167 or $1067 after $100 cashback) for another location:

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/whitegoods-appliances/laundry/bosc…

    https://boschpromotion.com.au/i-DOS_Cashback/PersonalDetails

The $100 cashback was processed directly to my bank account with 72 hours of lodging the request online.

    • Current budget is under $500 so really basic functionality just needs to clean clothes doesn't even need to dry or other extra stuff. No delicates just be able to handle a few washes per week of normal shirts, shorts, pants, jeans, under clothes, undies, towels, blankets, bath robes and etc.

Three people in the house and we all wash about once a week or once a fortnight each.

Cheapest most efficient running one wins the purchase as money is our ultimate decider.

We would only be willing to spend more if it can do bigger loads or more features for less money somehow of course.

Just asking other people what to avoid and what not to avoid etc and find out what is the common agreed upon best buy and what is not etc.

Front loader preferably as I have read about their many benefits over top loaders over the years.
