LA Hotel

Taking my son Ski/boarding in Utah in Jam/Feb. We are having 2 days in LA on the way so he can go to Universal Studios and see an NBA game. I was looking for accommodation, ideally somewhere we can easily walk from to go to shops/restaurants etc and have been recommended Hollywood. Looking at the obvious hotel websites and the proliferation of aggregation websites makes it just way too confusing. We are looking at the 24-26 Jan and 2 star hotels are $240 USD a night. Any recommendations on either deals or somewhere different to stay? Looked at VRBO and Air B&B already.

  • There’s a booking.com cash back offer so maybe do that if you can.

2 stars for 240 USD?? I guess you’re booking late. I paid $270 for a 4 star king suite apartment. I just Ubered everywhere. Uber pool is cheap over there.

Where exactly in Hollywood was this?

Personally I’d stay near Venice beach. Hotels should be reasonable around there…

    • Most of the hotels in Hollywood. i've been looking near the walk of fame area. Havent looked at Venice Beach since the 2 places we are going in our whirlwind stopover are the Staples centre for an NBA game and Universal Studios theme park. Both are a long way from Venice Beach and even with Uber or Lyft we will be travelling a lot. I've driven in LA before but this time would prefer not to so relying on transport. I've also been to Venice Beach a few times before including last February.

      • Ok so you have been to LA before. Confuses me why the hell you’d want to stay near the walk of fame. That’s like staying near Times Square.

I stayed at Le Parc Suite Hotel West Hollywood was $378 for 2 nights. Only a 30 minute drive from the staples Centre and universal

  • I have previously stayed at Magic Castle Hotel in Hollywood. Its a short walk to the Chinese Theatre and walk of fame, close to food options, there's a subway stop that can take you to Universal.

The hotel has gives out free snacks & drinks and has a free laundry service which is a nice added feature.

    • I am travelling with my 16 year old son, we need a room with 2 beds, we arent sharing a bed. Magic Castle is nearly $800 AUD for 2 nights, I'm looking for somewhere a bit cheaper.

  • Try Priceline. Or another area. North Hollywood is slightly cheaper according to a friend that recently went.

  • It is always expensive to book a hotel in LA.
Your best bet would be to use PriceLine express deal
Sometimes you could get a decent price when booking it last minute (like a day before), but it is risky and not sure if it'd work in LA

https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Hotel_Review-g32655-d84505-Re… We like staying here. The staff is really helpful with public transport options and it's just around the corner from the underground that will take you to Univeral Studios and the Staples Centre. A basic breakfast is included and they have kitchenettes.

  • Thanks everyone. I used one of the 12% off codes on the main OzBargain boards and booked into the Orchid Suites in Hollywood. Still expensive but travelling with my 16 yo son, memories of a lifetime! This is also just a side-trip on the way to ski/boarding in Utah.

I'd recommend the Coral Sands. It's right across from the subway stop which takes you direct to Universal :)
