Buying a Used Car from a Toyota Dealer

Edit: Have decided on a new car

Hi All,

I'm considering buying a user car from a Toyota dealership and would like to know what i should be checking for.

I have done my own research and have read the following.

  1. https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/check-vehicle-reg…
  2. https://www.ppsr.gov.au
  3. Take into account the value of the registration

I also have read that I should check the service history of the vehicle.
Could someone please explain to me if this is the log from Toyota, or is another document it is referring to.

Some have recommended using an independent assessor as well. From your experience, does this add any value, especially if you are buying it from a Toyota Dealer (https://www.toyota.com.au/used-cars/why-buy-toyota-certified…).

Thanks.

With that many questions (including not knowing what a logbook is), I implore you to take someone more knowledgeable with you. Don't go alone.

What car have you decided to look at? What model/year/mileage/cost?

    • Yea i do intend to. But this is just for searching processes. I do have someone I can bring but dont want to use too much of their time.

      • How many will you look at and drive before getting a knowledgeable friend in?

Not sure as of right now. I don't have a set limit.

I am aware that the searches do cost tho.

          @shadow131:

Well it wastes everyone's time tbh.

    • 2016 Toyota Corolla ZRE182R 34k and cost is around 19k

Almost might be worth looking at a brand new one for $23,990 drive away, especially if you're not mechanically minded. That'll give you 3 years of worry-free motoring with capped price servicing

      • If you're spending that much you might just be better off with a brand new Kia Cerato Hatch, $19,990 drive away with free auto and 7 year warranty. Worth a look as its on par with the Corolla in terms of reliability and quality.

        • Seriously?

        • @Colombian: Both the current Corolla and Cerato are 5 year old designs, with on par reliability and age of the drivetrains. If you don't have your head so far up your arse to care about badges then yes, brand new it seriously is a good alternative to spending 19k on a 1 year old Corolla.

  • :/ take someone who knows what they are doing…

Can you look and see possible issues? CAN you test drive and check things like cv joints, ect?

    • I dont get what you are saying, it's good advice. Someone who does not exude knowledge and confidence in cars is going to be sold a lemon or ripped off by a dubious car salesman.

If I took my mechanic mates they would look and check lots of things. Albeit not fully comprehensive.

My best advice is to take a mobile mechanic and ask him to check the car for you, I did it on my mazda and he gave a list of problem that i did not see, and wrote a report and asked the dealer to fix it. this also includes faults codes in the car's electrical systems. and also I managed to negotiate the price down even further after the mechanic report.

this is my suggestions and its well worth it.

    • Solid advice there. If you are not confident as to where to start, get someone who can do it for you.
