Which Seller to Purchase from for Grey Import (from a Warranty Perspective)? Looking for Galaxy Note 8 (Dual SIM)

I've heard QD has pretty good after sales support, despite being grey import? What about DWI, Shopmonk?

Also looking for relatively quick delivery (by Dec 9) but that might be hoping for too much. Open to buying an as new or brand new off someone who has one on them.

Primary reason for wanting a grey import version of the Note 8 is for dual SIM. I've seen some dual SIM "hacks" but it requires a contraption to be installed which looks pretty ugly.

Small chance I may look into rooting the phone, in which case I guess it wouldn't matter whether I buy grey import or local, as that would probably void warranty regardless, but unlikely at this stage.

Also wanting the option of being able to use Samsung Pay/Android Pay, but I imagine this would simply require a reinstallation of an Australian OS.

Summary of questions:
  • Which of the grey importers has good after sales support?
  • Wanting a Galaxy Note 8 grey import for dual SIM. Hoping to pay <$1000.
  • Want delivery pre-Dec 9
  • Would consider buying from someone if they have one they want to sell if the condition is either As New or Brand New
  • Small chance I may want to root the phone, in which case local or grey import would be unimportant, but unlikely at this stage.
  • Want to be able to use Samsung Pay/Android Pay. Does this require reinstallation of firmware?

Thanks in advance guys :)

Kogan/Dick Smith have surprisingly been better than most of the grey import sellers I have purchased from when it comes to after-sales support. Had overheating issues with my Nexus 6P within a month, they sent over a brand new replacement with a higher storage capacity as they didn't have any stock left for the one I had originally purchased. Haven't had an issue since then, it's been almost 1.5 years

    • Second this.
My nexus 5x went into a boot loop 1.5 years after purchase, unsure of warranty status as 'grey imports' normally have 1 year.
I contacted them and they gave me a label to print and post to their service centre. Got an email roughly 10 days later saying it's damaged and unrepairable, but there's no more nexus 5x in stock.
They gave me an option of Samsung S5, Xperia XA1 or Motorola G5S. Not sure what to pick.

      • Ah wow. And these are the options they've given you for no extra cost, despite being out of warranty?

        Is this happening now?

        • Yep it's happening now. And I asked for a refund instead which they've obliged, no argument.
Would buy at Kogan again if this is their normal stance on warranty.

        • @charzy: Wait, a full refund?! I'm genuinely surprised…!

And just confirming you are out of warranty right?

        • @illumination:
Phone is 1.5 years old. Warranty from their website I can see is 1 year. However they say kogan HK/ kogan AU abide by ACL.
The response in the email said they'll organise a full refund of what I paid (purchased during a 20% off sale from memory on kogan ebay), and should receive in 3-5 days.

I too am very surprised. I would've been happy with the phone replacement from the above 3, but kindly asked for the refund. If this is how they treat their warranty, I'll be more than happy to purchase from them again.
I think it can be situational as well; nexus 5x boot loop is VERY common. A friend of mine had her nexus 5x die the day after mine did with boot loop issues.

    • Very interesting.. that's a pretty good story!

  • Dick Kogans….

  • Hi, picking up this topic as it matches a current question I have. As per OP I am keen on dual sim, but a Galaxy S9. The advice on Kogan is pretty positive. I see that Amaysim have 24 months warranty. Are they good with warranty issues?

  • Don't buy a Samsung grey import is my tip. I didn't buy from Kogan so can't comment on them, but I bought an S7 Edge dual sim model when I lived in Singapore. The screen cracked and Samsung Australia refused to service it or repair/replace the screen even if I paid because the "parts are different" and "overseas models are not supported".

Basically I had to send it back to Singapore through a network of friends to get it repaired there.
