Amaysim Asking Unusual Questions for Prepaid Service Cancellation

To all amaysim users. It seems like you need to provide following information in addition to usual name and DOB check to cancel your prepaid service:

  • Current Payment Method
  • Email address
  • Regular number to call/txt
  • Last 4 digits of your card
  • may be more?????

A friend of mine contacted Amaysim chat for a prepaid service cancellation as she no longer required. The verification was done with usual name and DOB etc on portal before chat starts, then the chat person asked " For any account change or updates we will require additional information from you. Can you please provide Current Payment Method, Current Email Address and number that you regularly call or text".

That seems very unusual and even after providing that the chat person asked for last 4 digit of Credit Card, even though the current payment method was BPAY and auto-charge on card was cancelled earlier.

Just thought to check if it's ok to ask these kind of questions for a simple service cancellation and does it align with privacy act?

Maybe it's to protect themselves from customers being cancelled by somebody else? If the CC payment was cancelled earlier why did she think she needed to contact them? Just stop using the service and it will go into AYG mode with no credit and expire a year after the last recharge.

  • 2FA often tied to mobile

if you can cancel or report lost sim replacement, with just DOB & name - That's too easy.

then 2FA would be useless, when anyone got hold of your mobile service.

It's prepaid, so just don't top it up and throw away the sim?

  • Have you been ahhh…. selling products…with you mobile?

  • A question that's not been asked is does she actually want to cancel, or is she taking her number to another provider? If it's the latter, then cancelling will cause big headaches.
