Recommendations for Best Mango from Local Supermarket

Which brand (variety) is the best Mango?

Last year, I bought some best mango from wolly. It has sort of fragrant creamy taste (almost like dessert, but healthy XD), and really cheap (around $1 ea I think). However, I can't remember the brand name.

This year, I tried Calypso mango - it is rather bland; and Kensington - better than Calypso, but no way near the taste of last year's.

Thanks in advance.

  • I tried Calypso mango - it is rather bland

Guess it's going to be down to personal taste, but Calypsos are my favourite! I prefer it because of the texture and it's not as messy to eat as the more mushy ones. They're now $2 each at my local woollies!

It might be Kensington Pride (KP), which I find to be fragrant, creamy/soft in texture and sweet, and also my favourite! They're currently around $2-2.50ea at Coles and Woolworths but often go for $1ea in markets, especially if you buy a box. Some Asian grocers also sell them for $1-$2/kg during January, especially once they start to over-ripen

    • i dunno. Kensington seems taste different?

      • Yeah I think it can vary widely, but after trying most varieties available, I rkn they're the best

R2E2? They're more yellow papaya coloured. Generally quite bigger. Tastes similar to a papaya to me.

Bowen? - probably the best of the lot - bit better than kensington (which are my usual buy).

    • it was more red-coloured. just couldn't remember the name.

  • They are all nice. I quite like Calypso, nice and fleshy without too much mess.

  • "The Kensington Pride variety was first discovered in Bowen, north Queensland, but is thought to have originated as a seed imported on a shipping line from India. Kensington Pride has been known under several different names, including Bowen, Bowen Special or Kensington."

Personally, I prefer Kensington Pride because it comes closest to tasting like the Alphonso mangoes (from India) we used to eat in Singapore.

Add salt and they all taste the same.

    Try Honey Gold.

I'm a big mango fan, after moving down under tried all the popular varieties - found Honey Gold to be the best, for me.

Bit expensive, usually 3.50 retail, 2 for 5 on special but well worth it.

Its also available for a shorter time period, this year's first batch available right now in Coles (retail, no special)

  • I love mangoes too. The Honey Gold and the R2E2 are the best. They are big and a little tart. Unfortunately, they tend to sell more of the Kensington and Calypso at the supermarket. Both are overly sweet and too small.
