Going for a New Job - Electrical Usage Advisor - Help!

Hi OZB

As titled I am going for a new job and it involves a lot of public interaction and developing tools and services designed for customers to use less electricity/manage usage.

As we are all a frugal bunch for the best part - I am seeking what types of energy saving you have done at your house or business and how would you feel about a company representative advising you on how you could save usage at home/business? Other factors of the role include searching out new energy saving technologies and the application in the home - how inclined would you be in listening to this information and integrating this in to your day to day life if you were approached or sourced it from a company?

This is a bit of a long shot and excuse the vagueness of the topic. I am doing my own research for the role but would love to get some feedback from you guys who would have probably implemented a lot of cost saving measures over the years since pricing has risen.

This is not a cold calling role or anything like that.

Cheers
Gringesai

I know you're embarking on a new venture, but advice to get ahead.

Twitter, linked in, create a work account that you an follow companies you come across through linkedin and network also find them on twitter, plus ones you may already know in the game.

You're major state owned power company generally have lots of literature and a mock smart home displaying some of this tech and tips, Go have a chat with them and take a good look at what they are promoting. (record as much info as you can on companies and equipment manufacturers model numbers etc so you can see what else those companies have. They are paid to talk you through these things use it as education for yourself too.

See if there is a trade exhibit on and spend the day networking and getting advice. (don't be afraid to ask to goto one if possible even if it's interstate or overseas) just be solid with proposal to you're employer and what you hope to gain (think Globally not just locally)

If residential is the market look at architects and builders too promoting energy saving building go sit down and talk to them you're going to have to pretend to be a potential customer but small white lie in the sake of research.

Uni's run lots of research on this too if you can have a hunt maybe even call up the engineering departments and speak to them and tell them what you're looking for they could have some cutting edge things that they are working on thats being funded by one of the majors.

CSRIO they have all sorts of goodies

That's what i could think of straight off the bat

    • Thanks Toons - very sound advice on all fronts. Your advice all ready kicked in and I just reached out to a mate I forgot about who drives a zero emissions company.

      Thank you greatly.

I wish you all the best.

Also remember to look for affiliate companies Xiaomi for example have ties into lots of large electrical manufacturers some products are even built, engineered and designed by them. they just brand for the rest of the world with one of those partners i.e Phillips,

They were part of a consortium that bought out Segway but they keep the Segway naming in the deal.

        • Thanks again - interestingly just opened my Xiaomi BT headphones and the ear connector has all ready broken. Classic Xiaomi

  • If one is going for a role as a Electrical Usage Advisor, wouldn't one already have detailed knowledge of energy saving techniques? Why are you asking others?

There is always one hero like yourself who tries to point out the obvious. People who fit your mould never learn as they think they know everything. I know plenty as have worked in the industry for over 7 years, asking other people for advice who may all ready be in the role or have experience is a time saving and knowledge building resource. Please go and waste time somewhere else.

Objectively, you are the one needing polite feigned people skills. There is no onus on tsunamisurfer. Maybe they were just testing to see your charm. This in OzBargain, we're all heroes in various states of denial.

Please show your prospective employer this thread and reply when the interview question 'How do you deal with people who challenge your position' comes up.

        • Thank you to the both of you. Appreciate your helpful input. I couldn't believe I missed it before, but you both absolutely correct.

        • @Gringoesai:

You will of course reveal your true self with the use of the words Hero and Time Waste at the interview right?

        • @Gringoesai:
What are your thoughts on RMS as a measure of AC voltage, particularly with respect to pseudo sinusoidal waveforms.

        • @tsunamisurfer: Correct

        • @Frugal Rock: A single phase AC source rectified with a full wave bridge has a output that reaches the peak voltage, and drops down to zero. A 3 phase AC source with full wave rectification would have the same peak voltage, It has a higher average output, and therefore more power.

        • @Frugal Rock:

You may have to wait a while as he'll have to start a pseudo sinusoidal waveforms thread.

        • @Gringoesai: Can I get your thoughts on feeder automation and its impact on Swer lines?

        • @Gringoesai:
How does that relate to RMS and pseudo sine? Looks more like standard phase versus 3 phase.

        • Maybe go back and study your time intervals. Look forward to your response on my question.

        • @Gringoesai:
0/10 for avoiding a basic question. You should probably just be upfront that you aren't a qualified engineer, rather than defensive. Regarding any question raised by you, are you talking about the shill question directed squarely to yourself by you? Is that the one? You seemed to avoid answering that one too.

        • @Frugal Rock: Can I get an answer please, Sir Engineer - 0/10 for avoiding a basic question. Honestly, I would be very interested in your thoughts.

        • @Gringoesai:
So your question to yourself was a mistake?

Do you mean genuine historic feeder automation or do you mistakenly mean the introduction of smart grid digital feeder automation.

        • @Frugal Rock: smart grid

        • @Gringoesai:
          See, you've learnt something today.

        • @Frugal Rock: Why are you not answering the question? Can I get your thoughts on feeder automation and its impact on Swer lines.

        • @Gringoesai:
You conspicuously didn't even answer your own question, or mine. Will they need an upgrade of the OCR. Is that your genius.

        • @Frugal Rock: Not bad. Irrespective there are no swer lines with feeder automation and the fact you entertained it is quite funny. The best comms comes direct from the breaker. There you go - you learnededed two. Enjoy your life Dildo Shwaggins.

          @Gringoesai:

Siemens, actively pushing for feeder automation on SWER lines in bushfire prone areas in 2016:

"More specifically, this paper describes to electricity distribution companies a means to greatly reduce bushfire risk using ACRs on SWER networks and describes the performance and features that may be prescribed in technical specifications."

"Typically the modern microprocessor controlled single phase recloser carries a significant cost burden for application on SWER lines which generally supply only a few customers."

          https://corporate.siemens.com.au/content/dam/internet/siemen…

          yours sincerely,

          Frugal Rock

        • @Frugal Rock: The breaker will be in single shot on a bushfire day anyway making this a pipe dream/gold plating. Show me where they have this installed in the real world. Thought so….. congratulations on finding an article that is hypothetical garbage from a supplier. Bravo - amazing. Enjoy your work at a residential level.

        • @Gringoesai:
You asked for my thoughts, not a list of installations. You lost.

        • @Frugal Rock: lol - you do know how the bushfires started in Victoria? Breakers were in auto. Good work - glad you continued dribbling. Jog on mate

        • @Gringoesai:
You have more chance of a reality show about a cantankerous failhard salesman. Did you lose your job as an angry postie?

        • @Frugal Rock: Your egotistical disposition is on show and it's ugly. Go invest in ACRs on a swer you amateur

      • so… your going to be an 'advisor' where obviously, cx is vital and yet you cant handle a single drop of criticism… idk
