PS4 PRO Loud fan

I recently bought a PS4 Pro and I noticed that while playing COD WW2 and NBA 2K the console's fan was going off! Ridiculously loud and was getting a bit hot so I took it back to EB games and got a replacement. The new console now is not as loud but still makes a lot of noise especially with Pro enhanced games. I am wondering if anyone has experienced similar PRO-blems and if they were able to rectify it. Or, is it just how the Pro is with it's fan system. Are there bad batches out?

  • This has been the only reason I've yet to buy a ps4 pro.

  • I've had the opposite, mine has been very quiet.
My original PS4 made a heap of fan noise, upgrading to the Pro I think I've only heard the fan crank up once or twice in the 6 months or so I've had it, even then never for long.

    • Are you playing on full 4k settings on your tv?

      • I've only got a 1080p TV, but for games that have Pro support I'm usually picking the quality settings which I'm assuming are doing the higher resolution rendering and downsampling it, so not full 4k.

        • Yeah I've played Wolfenstein - The new order on this and it was quiet like nothing was going on but as soon as an enhanced game is put in and making the most of the technology it is pushing the fan to keep it cool. I love my 4k tv and the PS but damn this fan annoys me haha

      • I've purchased the new revised version CUH-71XX and its mostly silent. I'm playing pro enhanced games (Wolfenstien New Colossus, Horizon Zero Dawn, Titanfall 2) in full 4k (but no HDR as my 4k tv does not support it) and it runs mostly quietly. Occasionally the fan will spin up to an audible level, but you gotta be within 1-2m range to actually hear it. Speakers drown out the sound, and I keep the volume at a fairly low level. My concern is that the fan is not spinning fast enough to keep the PS4 cool, the rear gets fairly toasty, but not enough to warrant a return.

Addendum: my OG PS4 was a bloody jet engine spooling up 90% of the time. The remaining 10% was when it was sitting on the PS home screen haha

        • Okay that's strange because I have that CUH-71 series one as well. I do have HDR on my tv though so maybe that does affect the GPU etc. Hmmm I was thinking of buying a mini fan and keeping it near the console to try keep the airflow going, may work for the rear of your console as well.

This is very common complaint with the PS4 Pro. I'm still waiting on a revision that fixes the issue. The fact that the new Xbox One X is smaller, more powerful and mostly silent makes it even more impressive. I'll probably be upgrading to an X first before I replace my PS4 with a Pro just because of that. Noisy game consoles are distracting.

    • I have both and have to agree that the X is much quieter, probably because the X uses "liquid cooling"

Both get really hot in the rear. They are not suited with old style tv cabinets where the rear is blocked off, the rear needs access to open air for the hot air to vent out.
I originally had the pro on the bottom row which had the rear blocked off, it got hot really fast compared to the X, I poked around and could feel the back of the pro was super hot like an oven, sides were cool same with the X. both have intake vents on the sides and exhaust in the rear. The problem with the pro is that the side vents are tiny because of it's design. so the fan needs to work harder to suck in the cool air. also small vents means more wind noise, imagine inhaling really fast with an open month vs with your mouth slightly open.

I switch the 2 around, the pro now on the top row which has an open rear, the wall behind the cabinet still gets hot though. X is temporarily at the bottom until I can find a better cabinet, it seems to handle heat better than the pro.

  • I had this problem with the fat PS3. It gets too hot and on one unfortunate night, it died.

    • RIP.

    PRO-blems
    Lol

  • I've had my Pro since the day it was released and (touch wood) I've not had any major problems with it, but it's always had a loud fan. While I notice it from time to time, it doesn't bother me at all. I'd be interested to know if the loud fan is seen as a fault…

    • From what I've read on other playstation forums etc is that a majority of people have the Pros with loud fans and minimal have quite ones. I'm assuming if it is played on a 4k tv with all settings on the tv and Pro set to make the most out of it the fan is working hard to keep it cool thus making it loud. Sony should've still worked on their cooling system a lot better.

your room is too hot probably

    • If the room is at about 18 degrees and it struggles in that heat then that's not the best news.

      • That's unusual, man. maybe clean the fan first, dusty fan makes noise louder. there're videos on youtube about it.

        • Does taking the top of the console void the warranty?

        • @aypapii: better talk to sony rep. I think it's okay to open it. coz it's designed for cleaning convenience

@armedgoat: okay thanks man! I'll see what they say

Just spoke to a sony rep and he said it does not void the warranty, infact it's recommended to keep the fans clean

  • i've had ps4 pro for nearly 6mths. i didnt really notice it being as loud as my old normal ps4. back in my old ps4 days, i noticed that the air intake for the console is at the back. and when i give it some room at the back (sticking out a little bit from the cabinet) relieve the fan noise a little bit and cool down the console by quite a lot. maybe take it out of the cabinet if you put it in one. hope that it helps.

    • Thanks. I did try having it on the top of the tv unit but it's not a huge difference.

  • If you have no fan noise you probably have a 1080 tv or not in the highest "mode" for the res. un-enhanced Pro games are quiet. Pro enhanced ones are loud from experience

  • Mine is terrible playing AAA games at 4K. Indies are fine.
