How to Store and Discard Used Motor Oil?

Fellow DIY mechanics,
how do you store the oil after it's drained to the oil bucket?
Where do you throw them away?
Do you always put new washers on when putting back the oil drain plug?

pour it back to the oil bottle that you've filled in your car.

if still got leftover in the bottle and can't find any spare empty bottle, then try ask for some from your local garage.

dispose them at your local council recycle centre

depends how 'crushed' it is, you can reuse the washer but risk leaking and later all the hassle to re-drain/re-fill to fix the leak.
but many tight arse never change their washer, reusing them forever.

I put them back into an empty oil bottle/can (from which the new oil is coming from). Clearly mark that it is used.

Go to supercheap or autobarn with an oil disposal service. It is free.

I hardly change the washers but good idea as habit.

I go to SuperCheap Store in Dandenong. They have big disposal bin outside where you can dispose your oil.

    • i always have left overs in the bottle

You can use plastic bottles, ie milk bottles. AFAIK, engine oil is not a plastic solvent.

PS. still clearly mark the bottle in case of accidental ingestion.

        • Holy crap, this milk is black! And thick! Oh well, if that’s all we have in the garage for my weet bix…

But yes, please, don’t put stuff like old oil in any containers designed or that look like food bottle. People are actually that stupid that they will think it is edible.

Source: I work in a workshop with stupid people…

      • if you always have left over combine them if they are the same oil then you have a an empty one.. or do you have lots of bottles with a small amount in them

We use it to oil the fence posts. Works better than anything bunnings sells.

    • my grandfather would do this and can't seem to remember why

Spent oil is thick and water repellent. Mix it with turpentine and it'll soak into the timber making an almost impenetrable water shield.

        • yeah that's a good idea

          thanks

  • Dipping nuts and bolts in the oil to keep them slick and prevent them from rusting.

my last flatmate would pour the old oil into old plastic milk bottles and throw it in the wheelie bin and then tell me it helps lubricate the rubbish trucks from the inside

    • ahahahahah

Then sir, your flat mate is an arsehole.

        agreed he was.

this was the last straw so asked him to move out lol

  • Spray on surfaces to control ants and other crawling insects from entering.

  • Hello. First of all please do not discard used motor oil into the environment (eg as an insect spray or discarding into your garden or the wheelie bun). I used to store used oil in old oil containers and a used 20L plastic paint tin that had a sealing lid. Once I built up a bit of a stash I would take it to the local waste transfer station. Most local councils will have some kind of a facility to take used motor oils from residents, look up your council website.

As far as washers go, it depended on cars. On my 'good' car, a new crush washer was supplied with the oil filter so I would replace it every time. On my 'daily drive' there was a plastic/nylon style washer which seemed to hold a seal use after use.

  • I use it as an outdoor wood preservative.
    Termites hate the stuff.

  • It seems auto shops only recycle engine oil but not engine oil filter?

I know some big recycling places take them but sometimes just don't bother to drive there just to recycle 1 or 2 filters…

  • Hey this is left field but I know an oil disposal company that might help you out, http://www.cookers.com.au/

If you're getting rid of something volatile like oil I recommend asking professionals like them, or any proper mechanic, you can really ruin your machine or your health if you don't deal with disposal properly
