Virgin Mobile - iPhone Question - Is this good deal?

I am currently on 24months $38per month plan (Samsung S5) which is about to finish ( $87 left to pay off on current commitment (3 months))

I chatted with online rep and for next contract on iphone6 32 gb (3 gb data, unlimited calls/sms within AUS and $50 international calls & text)
https://www.virginmobile.com.au/Shop/iPhone-6-32GB-spacegrey

He agreed wit wave off $60 from that payout, so I have to pay $27 to finish current contract and I also get the $100 credit for this upgrade ( in 2nd bill).

So I have to pay = 27$ payout + 40$ x 24m = 27+960 = 987$
I will get $100 credit
So effectively 987-100 = 887$

Does this sound good deal if I have to get a iphone6? Or better deal elsewhere?

The iPhone 6 32gb is today, a $449 dollar phone (JB HIFI when purchased in the store, locked Telstra Prepaid, but can unlock easily)

If we subtract cost of phone from cost of 2 year contract, that is $887-449 = 438

Let's divide up 438 into 24 months that equals to $18.25 of value of which is spent on telecomms services of which you receive 3GB of data, unlmited calls and a small amount of International calls.

To me, sounds like an average deal, to others, probably just 'normal price'. The main problem is IP6 is starting to become outdated and another OZb user has mentioned it runs poorly on new IOS

IMO there are lots of great Android devices in the $400 dollar range that would be a massive upgrade to your S5. See the poll

I'd suggest not getting an iphone 6. It's old, and apple have a habit of screwing up their old phones with new OS, meaning it's life would be very limited. Furthest back I'd go is the iphone7, if forced.

However, I'd also not go ios at all, and would be looking at a sensibly priced android phone and to be able to shop around for the best carrier deal. You should be able to get a 1 year old tech phone for less money than this (eg ZTE Axon 7) - which is much more the sweet spot.

If screen size doesn't matter as much, the SE is cheaper than a 6 and has the internals of a 6S but its screen is smaller than the 6.
My SE still runs well on the current iOS but I doubt it will last another 2 years.

  • They offer the Galaxy A5, Oppo R11, and the Sony Xperia XZ on the same deal, if you prefer an Android phone.
