VicRoads Driving Licence Always Fails When Used for Credit Checks

Hi There,

Whenever I apply for credit (Such as a Qantas FF earning credit card) or even a mobile phone account I never pass an identity verification check if I use my VicRoads driving licence.

For example, I tried to register a SIM the other day only to fail the identity check using my licence. I put the SIM card in the name of the missus and her licence was accepted as ID.

I've sent a note to VicRoads asking them to check the database of VicRoads licences to ensure my details are correct. I expect them to say the equivalent of "No fault found".

If that is the case, what are my options? Are there any? It's a pain as I always end up having to fish out the Medicare card or worse, having to email other documents. In the case of the SIM I was registering, it wouldn't even take the Medicare card either. Do I exist? Helloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo?!?!?

TL:DR I fail identity checks when using VicRoads licence for credit cards e.t.c. I don't know why.

Do you have multiple names? If you have a split name "John Pat Joe", could your name in other systems be First name: "John Pat" Last name: "Joe", and in the Vic Roads system as First Name: "John", Middle Name: "Pat", Last Name: "Joe", or a variation on this?

Does one or other record leave out a middle-name entirely? Does one name have a hyphen and another not?

Is there someone else with the same name that's being associated with your file under either the Vic Roads system, or in the credit system?

    • I have the standard First name, middle name , surname.

My license only has the initial of my middle name shown, i tried both the initial and full middle name but neither worked.

I would be surprised if someone had the same combination of first, middle, surname as me in victoria, it is feasible but unlikely.

      • By any chance, are you registered with TSC(Bus/Taxi Driver/Instructor)?

      • From my job where I verify licenses on a semi-regular basis, the middle name isn't used/isn't required. Make sure when you are having a license verified you are using the license number, some licenses also have CARD numbers.
It doesn't matter if someone has the same NAME as you, as the verification checks that you name matches the license number.
        Make sure you haven't used a nickname/shortening, like Matt/Matthew, Charlie/Charles, etc.

    Maybe you are a ghost?

Can you see yourself in the mirror?

    • Isn't that vampires? Though I can see if the check comes up with OP being 100's of years old, that might affect it.

Just had a look and I could see myself, interestingly my reflection spoke and said i'm the fairest of them all….

  • "Uvuvwevwevwe onyetenvewve ugwemubwem ossas" is that you? :)

How many SIMs have you activated using your license? If I remember correctly, each identification will only allowed to be used 3 times per company.

I've sent a note to VicRoads asking them to check the database of VicRoads licenses to ensure my details are correct. I expect them to say the equivalent of "No fault found".

Why don't you just go there and verify over the counter if it's so important?

    • It was with Lycamobile and i've never dealt with them before (I'm not a prolific user of SIMS, i just bought a couple in their black friday deal for my folks who are over from the UK for a month).

      Go where?

      • VicRoads.

        • Not sure what i need to verify with VicRoads? If they weren't sure that I am who I say I am, why did they give me a license?

          @Poolprouk:

It's about making sure the first middle last name are keyed in properly.

Got a mate who is Chinese descendant, that has 2 word first name, with a space in between, and no middle name. VicRoad keyed in as First, Middle and Last name.

        • @ausdday: fair point. when they reply to my email i will ask them to verify that my full name has been keyed correctly. Cheers.

          @Poolprouk:

That's the reason I suggest you make a trip to VicRoads. Instead of waiting and trust an email that says "yup, they are correct", go there, talk to the person over the counter, have him/her show you the screen if possible, and verify with your own eyes.

No fault found at this end either.

  • Which telcomm are you using?

I know some providers don't confirm whether your drivers license is correct or not.

What they use is a database and reference. If someone else has used your drivers license number under their name, then it won't let you register.

You need to call up Telstra, (I suspect it is them because of my experience with this), and get them to ask the other person in the database to provide confirmation of their details. (sometimes it may also be due to someone overriding the system and registering via assisted staff, shit happens.)

I won't go into details about why I know this happens.

    • Lycamobile.

It's not just them though, whenever i apply for something online and have to put in ID verification, I get a fail when using my license.

This means having to submit extra paperwork on some occasions (especially credit card apps). I would hope that I would get less of these extra paperwork requests if they could verify my identity using my license (as it's a photo ID that in theory they can easily use for verification purposes).

      • Have you taken a look at your credit file to see if anything is strange? If anything signing up for a year of notifications will allow the system to populate your information so that if there is a problem, then they will pick it up before it gets too late.

I signed up for a year (veda) and then cancelled even though they kept ringing me up offering 80% off the product. I think you can do the free one, but man that is a pain in the neck and you have to jump through lots of loopholes.

In the past I've seen people gain credit with false documents. The name and address on the loan documents doesn't even match the real drivers license. The victim usually only finds out when a skip-tracer goes to try and find the person, but instead finds the wrong person.

It might not stop them from signing up for a sim card under your details, but it could stop them taking out a loan as the banks would go to one of these big credit score providers to do checks.

        • I had a look recently and I couldn't see anything odd. Nice thought though. I have seen nothing there or anywhere else to indicate that there is something sinister going on but I will keep the possibility in mind. Thanks!

  • It may be an error in the VicRoads database. I’ve done some work with another states equivalent, and often it can be based on poor data entry that isn’t obvious on the physical license itself.

Eg. If your name is “John Edward Smith” in the database it may be entered as
    First Name: John Edward
    Middle Name: [blank]
    Last Name: Smith

Or your entire name could be in the surname field.

Alternatively, do you have any special characters in your first name? My partner has an apostrophe in her first name and often web forms don’t allow apostrophe’s in the first name field.

In terms of how you go about finding this out and rectifying it, you really just need to get in touch with someone who knows what they are doing, and even then they may not be able to fix it. Potentially a Freedom of Information Request to correct an incorrect record (I’m unsure how this process works in Victoria)

  • Is your address for a unit, apartment or new suburb or estate? Could be failing the address verification process

    • Established address and a free standing home on it's own block, it's not a 1/4 scenario. You make a good point though, perhaps the house number is in the wrong field on the database.

      • Does the address have any extra spaces or look oddly formatted on the driver licence? When they do id checks it has to be entered exactly

  • Sorry to be pedantic, but in AUSTRALIA, we spell it LICENCE. Trump's mob use that other spelling.

    • very happy to be corrected!

  • I have same problem
    First Name: Muhammad Hamid
    Last Name: Javes

Whenever I use my vicroads license in banks, ATO and other departments this do not verify.

Same happen with my medicare card which is also not verifying.

My name on vicroad license is "Muhammad Hamid Javes"
But on my medicare card " Muhammad Ham Javes" this short name is due to limited space on medicare card.

Both IDs are not verifying. My overseas passport is verifying in ATO and i Never used overseas passport in banks.

What I do now????? Vicroads saying that my record is correct. Same centrelink saying medicare record is correct.

    Any suggestion

Remove your full name from this post unless you want to be scammed or be a victim of ID theft in future.

    • Good idea to remove your details asap from this post.

I had a recent investigation undertaken by Vic Roads and they came back to me with the answer that my details on their database are correct. They indicated that they do not actually share this database with anyone. So when you type these details into an online application form it doesn't actually check it with a central vicroads database

They suggested that when we are asked for a VicRoads licence details when doing an ID check online the application form may be expecting a certain number of characters and if your licence does not have that number of characters then it will suggest you've made an error.

Perhaps try adding a zero at the end or start of your licence number and see if you get the same result.
