  • I’m already in Optus but on a month by month. Can I port out to Kogan and then port back into Optus for this deal, keeping my number?

    • +1

Yes. You can also convert to a prepaid momentarily, then back to a M2M.

      • prepaid Optus?
Wouldn't that count as an existing Optus user?

        • No.

I went from pre paid to this. Well I got the 17gb deal that includes 2gb vinous data.

        • @T1OOO: How long did the whole process take? I switched to pre-paid last Tuesday, the same day I activated this offer but and I haven't received the Post -paid sim card yet

        • @GregFiona:

Instant. I kept my number and sim.

        • @T1OOO: This is hilarious! Optus live chat has been telling me to wait 24/48 hours since last week. I have been chatting with them every 2 days since Tuesday 12/12 and last night they told me they cannot access the temporary orders online(!) and that i will have to call 1300929949 (8am-9pm on weekdays etc). I have called them at 8:00am today and there is a message saying that the average waiting time is 90 minutes and that my call might not be answered LOL

        • @GregFiona:

that sucks, i go tlucky, but it took a hour via online chat,..

    • you can change to prepaid..but it could be a lot of pain as the whole process toke me 4 days

  • +3

That what I do every 12 months ☺️

  • -4

"For even more value, check out our 12 month Online SIM Only plans".

I can't see how to get the 'more' value. The only way to get the 15GB for $30 is online for 12M. What else is there? If it's EPL, that doesn't interest me.

  • +1

    This is $30/mth, not $30 for 12mths ?
(OP, If so, maybe change it to $30/mth)

      • +45

        wat?

        • +4

          Twig is flying hiiiigghhh

        • I just… I don't even… what @D6C1 said =\

  • "Optus $30 12 months Sim Only Plan with 15GB Data", doesn't the $30 plan only include 3GB of data? the $40 plan has 15GB?
"$30 My Plan Plus 12M SIM Only (Online) Plan ID: 800818/20074829 Data usage in Australia Monthly data inclusion 3GB" from http://smb.optus.com.au/opfiles/Shop/All/cis/Cis%20Documents…

    • Ooops, I just noticed the $40 plan is on sale for $30/m.

      • +1

Where? I can't see any sale.

        • If you can't seem to access the sale, go to the home page and find the promotion there.
          You've gotta select a 12 month plan @ $30/month.
          HF :)

        • @eastw1nd: Only new customers unfortunately. :(

  • Where are you seeing this deal?? Isn't it supposed to be $40?

Ahh yup it discounts afterwards. Great deal!

    • At what point does it discount?

      • Just before the buy stage, the discount appears

        • Ah only for new users. :(

        • @Shwayne: yeah…. I'm in the same boat!

  • +1

Can I keep my existing Optus number? Last time I tried this online they told me to get this deal I would need a new number.

    • New number only.

      • +1

This "new number only" is a new policy isn't it? I have done this 2 or 3 times as an Optus customer and signed onto new 12m plans in exchange for a better offer.

Australian consumers, be very wary of this type of behaviour. In Canada, the telcos have a habit of progressively jacking up prices for normal customers bit by bit, and reeling in new customers with loss leaders. All you get is a letter in the mail saying "your plan is increasing by $5/m on Jan 1 and we're reducing your service"

        Case in point: https://www.rogers.com/consumer/wireless/smartphone-plans?ip…

Those fees don't include nationwide calling (unless explicitly says), tax (~13%), 911 charge (~$0.75) and $25 activation fee. We have it good here by comparison.

        • Is there a telco that doesn't do this? I left Telstra because of the new customer only deals. Seems it's time to move from Optus now that my 12 months is almost up and they're pulling the same shenanigans.

Hardly see Vodafone deals, so hard to gauge whether they do it or not, but then, if they don't offer deals, then it does stand to reason that they treat everyone the same..

        • +4

@TheContact: here in Australia if you stick with any service providers they will suck you up. Take any example of telco, electricity, gas, insurance any example.
Here They call it lazy tax.
          You snooze you loose.

        • Looks like SIM only plans aren't much popular in Canada? Phone+SIM plans is always telco's game (and not that of consumer) to say the least. They win when you buy phone+SIM and get into a contract.

        • +1

@TheContact: I signed up to optus' offer last week which was identical to this, but without the TV streaming. Went on live chat now and they won't do it.
It seems all twlcos are like this. I'm sick of new customer only plans

        • @Enjj0y: I'm happy to switch companies. I just want the same number for obvious reasons.

        • @TheContact: I have been able to upgrade plans within Optus as recently as August 2016. Between then and last month when I tried again they changed their policy to only new customers.

      • What - can't you port out and port in again?

    • This is an active Optus Postpaid number and is not eligible for this offer. Select “Give me a new number” if you would like to take up this offer on an additional mobile service.

  • +3

Seems like a good deal, a number of unhappy customers on the Whirlpool forums though

Your mileage may vary of course.

  • +2

Looks like I've got to port out and port in to get a decent deal.

    • +1

Yep, it's absolute trash and infuriating.

      • +1

        Loyalty sucks here.

    • -4

No point porting out as you lose your number in the process, so just cancel and apply.

      • how do you lose your number? Can't you activate a pre paid and choose to keep your number?

      • +2

Never cancel, you will lose your number when cancelling a contract. Port it to prepaid or another service provider to keep it.

      • +1

Huh!? That's why people port out/in - to keep their number.

        1. You're on a month-to-month plan with Optus, with phone number: 1111 222 333.
        2. A new better Optus deal comes up.
        3. You go buy a $2 Telstra SIM from the supermarket.
        4. You port out number 1111 222 333 from Optus to Telstra.
        5. 20 minutes later you port number 1111 222 333 from Telstra back to Optus, as a 'new' customer.
    • What's the process for that?

  • Wow that's a great deal!

  • +1

Anyone with experience porting optus number out then back in into this plan? How long is the turnaround? Just don't want to be caught out without phone access for too long.

    • Try giving their sales team a call first. I signed up 2 ‘new customer’ plans using my existing Optus postpaid numbers a couple of months ago. They can do it, it just depends who you speak to.

      • I just tried and they wouldn't do it for an existing number

      • same here. tried online. was told that its for new customers only.

        • It's @#$# annoying the crap they put their existing customers through just to get the best deal.

    • @bkx3virgin
Just go buy a $2 sim from any other telco. Porting your number out usually takes a few minutes (however in the unlikely event of a system error/crash, it can take days and possibly weeks to rectify). Once your number is ported out go order this sim online. But for some reason you have to wait for the sim to be sent to you, they won't let you use a blank one which you can pick up from the nearest optus store. (i tried when a similar deal was on a few weeks ago) So that takes a couple of business days.

      • thanks! the "days to weeks to possibly rectify" scares me. and waiting for the sim to arrive will also prob take a few days given how poor Auspost has become!

    • Make sure to port out to non-optus network (eg Vodafone, Telstra).
I've faced issues porting from Optus to Amaysim and vice versa.

  • +2

It's a good deal as long as you don't experience any issues and need to contact their awful customer support, also keep a copy of the contract, they'll try to charge you $40/month.

    • After the debacle in me wanting to upgrade my cable plan (i.e. willing to pay a little more) and them not being able to find my account no matter what info I gave them, and now seeing them completely screw up billing for people here over multiple months I'm never signing up to anything Optus again, bar some management change or something in that area.

    • agree, mine's almost been changed to $40/mth from my current student discounted $36/mth, awful service

  • -5

Is this $30 for 12 months expiry or $30 per month

    • +9

      It's clearly $30 per month.

  • When checking out it still says $40 a month. Spoke to their live chat. Said the deal ended in November. When sending the link she said she couldnt see what i was talking about. Existing customers when checking out still get the discount? If so when is it applied?

    • This deal has only come back today, ignore them. Add $40 plan to cart, it will say $30 there.

      • +1

Thanks mate. Will do. Although now the option for existing customers is from prepaid to plan only. Im on a sim only

  • +7

I had bought this deal earlier. They charged me $40 in the first month + $15 for EPL even though the contract said minimum cost $360 over 12 months. I was furious. Contacted online chat but those guys are just atrocious and horrible. Tried multiple times with multiple people and they were just not willing to listen or do anything. Only excuse I got was discounts apply for second month. Like I haven't heard that before.

Finally called the customer services phone line and gave them a piece of my mind. Thankfully the person on the other side was reasonable enough this time and adjusted my bill. Waiting to see what I get in month 2.

    • Same here. On chat, they told me it's security deposit and will be credited in the 12th month. :(

  • Chat wants to have nothing to do with this promo….im stuck trying to complete the order and they are saying they cant see the promo.

    • +1

Start again, add $40 plan to cart, should see 25% discount applied so it is $30. Live chat are hopeless.

      • +1

ye i did that multiple times and it errors out at step 6 or checkout..or whatever the final step was.

Thanks though @Marrk. It's all gone through via chat now….eventually.

  • -4

This deal clearly doesn't exist. The published deal link brings us to the Optus page which says $40 per month. Regardless of whether you are New or Existing customer. Their online customer service also confirms the deal is $40 per month. Can OP provide exact details on how $30 is available to the public ?

    • +1

$40 deal then apply the 25% discount through the online purchase, read through the deal. Offer expires 03/01/2018 but Optus customer service seems to make this deal a pain to get through.

    • +2

      http://offer.optus.com.au/christmas-sale

      use this link

though the other one works as well for me, maybe browser issue?

    • its actually live, but it's so new that Chat doesnt know anything about it…finally jsut got mine processed…literally if you refesh the page, it changes by the minute…now they have just made a banner with the deal

    • +1

The big banner on my screen when I click the link says "$30 for 15GB" and the information in the plan also says "Now $30/month" and "25%off save $120".

I sounds more like another case of online "customer service" having NFI about what is going on.

  • $30 month for unlimited netflix and stan.

Anyway to get the stream from phone to tv?

    • Would probably have to mirror screen to Chromecast, which means not using mobile for anything else, and quality would only be SD.

      • +7

Doesn't work. It recognises the mirror and uses metered data. (tested myself).
The best I could do was download the 'offline' titles and then mirror after turning mobile data off.

I don't get why they make it such a hassle to project..

        • If it's the same as their mobile broadband, I have the SIM in a pocket wifi. The pocket wifi is connected to my laptop via a micro USB cable, and connected to my phone via wifi. I get unmetered data. (I don't have to put the SIM in my phone and watch on the phone, even though their site says so.) Plenty of others (but not all) on Whirlpool do the same.

        • @GregMonarch: I read the same, but in my attempts to follow what others achieved, I only got negative results.

        • @fratzhaus: Yeah it's strange. No pattern to it has been found that I know of. All I did was put the SIM in the E5786, and one month when I knew I hadn't used much data, I streamed some radio for 20 minutes. Then a couple of days later (to give it time to update) I checked my usage and it showed unmetered data.

    • +2

$30 month for unlimited netflix and stan.

No, it's unmetered.. you still need to pay separately for those services

      • +1

A micro USB to HDMI cable worked with my Samsung Galaxy S5. Used successfully to watch the EPL from the Optus Sport app on my TV when they had the free trial.

    • +3

Yup, I connect our Xiaomi Mi Box 3 International Edition to my Optus phone's wifi hotspot and run Netflix on the Mi Box plugged into a TV.

I only really do this when we're having a family holiday to keep the kids happy, but I can confirm that it's unmetered and only SD quality.

  • really starting to suck that you can re-contract with these $30pm deals…

  • Can someone confirm if the data will rollover for this plan?

    • No it won't.

  • "This is an active Optus Postpaid number and is not eligible for this offer. Select “Give me a new number” if you would like to take up this offer on an additional mobile service."

  • It has to be a new customer to Optus. Otherwise, it will be $40 per month

  • Doesn’t work when upgrading an existing month to month plan. Shows as $40 even after adding to cart.
Has anybody managed to get it?

  • +4

I chated with Optus staff and they offered 5gb on the top of the current plans for those who transfer from other providers. It maybe additional benefit!

    • 20gb total ? for 2 years ? or life of the plan ?

      • +1

        Life of the plan!

        • amazing, going to try my luck

    • Did they just offer you that when you mentioned you with another provider?

      • +1

I mentioned i change from virgin!

  • Does anyone know if Vodafone will match this deal? I would like to remain with Vodafone since I already have a plan with them.

    • Just finished chatting to their elavated support team and $36 was the best that they could do.

      • +1

Thanks for your reply, I think that switching over to Optus may be better since an above comment is saying they're offering extra data. Shame Vodafone couldn't be more competitive with their pricing.

      • +1

I'm with Vodafone on a $40 SIM only plan with 300 international minutes, their new SIM only plans only have 150 to certain countries (one of the ones I call) and an additional 500 minutes to countries I don't care about.

I'm out of contract, and no matter what I do, they will not budge on matching Optus's offer of 15GB + 300 mins @ $40 per month, let alone at $30. They simply can't change the international minutes.

I'd like to port to Optus but unfortunately the ONLY carrier with coverage in my house is Vodafone :( Both Optus & Telstra's maps show great coverage but everyone who has ever visited here with those carriers barely gets 1 bar inside the house, and with Vodafone I get almost full signal.

        • could be phone related, buy a cheap sim and test for yourself.

        • Hey man i just switched to Optus from Voda (for better value). On my iPhone when I'm connected to WiFi with low cell coverage the carrier name says "Optus Wi-Fi Call"; I can make calls and SMS just fine as long as I got WiFi. How's the WiFi coverage at your home?
