Need a laptop < $1000 for mum - what to buy?

Hi guys,

Mum needs a new laptop. Looking for recommendations under $1,000 - here are some requests:

  • 15 inch monitor or bigger
  • At least 256GB SSD
  • Decent battery life

Won't be used for gaming or streaming videos, mostly word processing and online browsing. It will also mostly be used at home so doesn't need to be portable (not a bad thing if it is though).

She has had a Dell in the past and wasn't happy, so would like to avoid Dell if possible.

Will this be suitable https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/346290 or are there any other deals closer to $1,000 that I've missed?

Thanks in advance!

    You can spend way less then 1k for a basic laptop.

    Just buy a cheaper one and upgrade the SSD. you will struggle to get decent battery life with the stock batteries for laptops with a 15" screen.

    Check out Centrecom and the like.

    • Thank you will look into it

    Once you find a suitable Laptop (that Asus Vivobook F510UA sounded ideal bar the HDD)
    Consider setting your Mum up with a resonable quality 24 or 27' display with a wirless mouse and keyboard.

    My home setup now is just my Asus Zenbook with dual 27' monitors.
    Saves owning 2 pieces of aging tech

    • Good idea mate, appreciate your input

    Your linked one doesn't have SSD that I can see. This one ticks all the boxes:

        Look into the display on this laptop before you pull the triger Billy.
        Personally I would rather have lesser hardware and a great display.

        • Do you have a model in mind that might be a better fit? You make a good point.

        • Honestly I didn't look too deeply into the specs. From what I can see, it's a:

          15.6" Full HD 1920x1080 SVA WLED display.

          Full specs here:

          @Billy_is:

          Some thing like this
          Quality display, NVMe SSD, i7-7500u benches really well considering the TDP & Lenovo build quality.

          Shipping is NC

          Realisitcly its probably more than what your mother needs but a realatively good deal considering the specs

          @Cheap Charlie:

          Starting at:$1,039.00

          I suspect the base model won't come with an SSD, OP should check.

      I would not recommend that laptop at that price point:
      - Poor screen res: 1366 x 768
      - Dismal CPU: N4200
      - No SSD

      No offence Barbarella, but that laptop would be more at home around $399

    • Appreciate the input barbarella!
