Is This The Best Way to Go about Installing Windows 10 on a Fresh Laptop?

Hi there guys,

I purchased the Metabox deal that was doing the rounds over a week ago and have been looking into how I'll install Windows 10 on the laptop as cheap as possible.

Will this work when the laptop arrives:

Download Windows 10 ISO and use a USB to bootload it onto the new laptop.

Buy Windows 10 Key here https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Windows-10-Pro-32-64-bit-Lifetim…

Use said key on laptop

Am I missing something? I see Windows 10 going for $200 (Which is crazy!) and I'm wondering how a method this cheap could work, I feel like there has to be a catch!

Cheers, Nathan.

    Am I missing something?

    Nope that's pretty much it.

You can install it without a key and buy one after you install as well if you didn't know.

  • Or Install Linux for free!
If you're 99% in-browser with the odd Word Processing or Spreadsheet like most people, it's a no brainer.

  • Never really heard of Linux, I'll look into it thanks! Anything else I should know regarding it?

Only that there's thousands of variants..
Ubuntu is the Standard Bearer for consumer Linux. I use Ubuntu. I have tried others but keep coming back to Ubuntu.
The Software Update system for Ubuntu seems to be the friendliest.
But at the moment, the current Ubuntu Release is essentially a Beta for next year's April release.

Linux Mint is a popular derivative of Ubuntu, commonly recommended to Windows converts.

Ferin OS is an Ubuntu based derivative that has easy to apply Skins to make your computer look and feel like Windows or MacOS (or others)

Most people in the know-how of IT never pay for Windows. You can just generate a key instead of paying for one that someone else has generated.
That's why it's so cheap in the Ebay link.

But yeah, that is the best way to install Windows. Use the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft,
it downloads the ISO and puts it on a USB for easy installation. (Win 10, Win 7/8)

Pro Tip: Ensure you download and install the 64bit ISO. Because 32bit OS has a ram limitation of 4GB.

  • If you're still looking for Windows 10 (Linux is always fun, but compatibility always gets me), I have bought it from Ozgameshop a couple of times in the past - They're a legit shop so I would think it's above board etc.

Just checked, it's on special again (seems like it's on special more than not), $90 for Win10 Pro OEM.. OzGameShop - they just email you your key an installation instructions (if you need it).

Edit: A touch over 3 hours remaining on that deal though.

    • Across 5 machines (3 desktops, a Netbook and a Laptop) with local installs and another 3 machines (all laptops) running an install from a (single) USB drive, I've never had any compatibility issues.
Ubuntu just boots up and runs, no driver installs required.

      • I wasn't having a go at Linux (although if I read back my 'fun' comment it does sound a bit flippant - my apologies), I meant to say - It's a great OS, I still use it on my NAS (a butchered/modded version of FreeNAS) and my various other builds in the past have worked great. ;)

And yep, Knopix, Ubuntu and more than you can poke a stick at are bootable without any installation. That's what gives it such a big following. The flexibility and the variations of the OS, probably any configuration you could wish for.

But for my kids PC & my work machine I'll use Windows. I always have problems getting my work applications to work correctly in Linux so after some trial and error (and a cheap copy of Win10) this is just easier for now.

        • Yeah, if you need specialty stuff, you're pretty much forced to use Windows (or possibly MacOS). Futzing about with WINE is not for me either.
For basic, everyday personal use though it is easy to install and to use, stable, secure and you can't argue with the price!

If you have a valid product key for Windows 7 or 8 from a older, decommissioned device, you can reuse it for a win 10 install… meaning you won't have to pay almost 100 for another OEM license

Users who already have a copy of Windows 10 may never ever need to buy a license because due to the way digital entitlements work now, the product key gets tied to your Microsoft account. Simply login to a online account after you finish installing Windows and see if it automatically activates

    • My laptop use to have window 7 in it when I purchase, however I reprogram the whole laptop to get ride of virus, and install window 10, then it ask me to buy window 10.

Do u know how to solve my problem?
