How Much Bitcoin Have You Lost?

My boss told me how he lost a bunch after mining in the early days. Someone else also told me they lost 192.

I knew ppl that had thousands of bitcoins, and they gave em away like they were worthless, at the time they practically were. I doubt anyone back then including myself saw any value in them.

some of us still don't see any value in them

      • Yeah I understand that but for comparison, most people see value in 'bits' on a banks computer or pieces of paper created out of thin air and backed by nothing. At least crypto has the value of electricity and 'work' behind it. :) All fiat money in history has collapsed at some point and been replaced, we could be witnessing such an event with crypto. At any point it's market now is no so big that I can't see it going away any time soon.

        • If that work was actually useful then it would have value. Maybe someone could work something into the crypto system…

Future value, maybe, but the exchanges that exist for them are more than happy to cash them out at current rates (more or less) so they certainly have present value.

just curious, how did they get so much bitcoins in the first place?

1 BTC. Was on a HDD in an old computer that was disposed of many years ago - at the time didn't even think about it as they weren't worth much, and couldn't really be used for much.

someone downvoted you for a whatever reason. lost 2 myself in a similar manner.

      • -3

It was downvoted because everyone once had bitcoin that they threw away.

Silly me. That makes perfect sense in a post asking people to do exactly that.

        • @sloshie:

I'm not questioning that, I was just explaining why it happened.

Doesn't Satoshi have a million that have lain dormant since inception?

The Bulgarian cops are meant to have 215K seized from organised crime.

    • Yes. If he sells them though it would likely trigger a sell off. So it's unlikely that he will.

      • Even then though if he sold the whole lot at once it would only be around 5% of total BTC (I think there are 21 million of them in total with about 17 million mined so far?) so any crash would only be temporary. I would more than likely expect that type of behaviour from the Wall St crowd, in fact I'm counting on it at some point.

      • why would he sell off,, he can just do a correction instead

      • The highest BTC address is 124k BTC. They sold 18k BTC in the past week. That's interesting right there

Though the unidentified (fictional?) Satoshi might hold across 1m BTC across different addresses

        • Bitfinex's wallet selling to all the new buyers in the bull market now?
