food labelling ….. we can’t even ensure that all, products with palm oil are labelled correctly …. ( for health or ethics pursuits) sometimes only way to tell is the saturated fat content of a food without animal fat specified in the list.

some chip manufacturers have moved to using sunflower oil in Australia ….. corn chip manufacturers in australia still use palm oil …… in the USA they can’t due to the FDA…. you couldn’t export and sell our CC’s or doritos to the USA …. too high a level of trans fats compared to their versions.

food manufacturers hate labelling and transparency of what is in their products, especially around sugar and salt.

very hard to find healthy processed food for kids …. adults …. we decide the crap we eat, kids trust us to feed them what is good for them and accept our judgement ….. fat parents feeding their kids chips and soft drink i see it so often as bad habits are handed down to the next generation….

Anything in the book about cooking insects?

  • Even in a country like Australia, the ethics of charging this much for a book such as this are pretty questionable IMHO. I wonder what the author/publisher see when they look in the mirror.

    • $40 for 296 pages of a printed book isn’t unreasonable …. if it is of interest to you , informative and makes you a smarter person …… i still buy lots of non-fiction books …… some go out of print and i’m glad i own them.

electronic versions …… i’m not a big fan of, if i will read the whole book, also not many A4 screen size pdf readers around, and some evokes have drm so you are limited to platforms it can be read on and even if the reader will be supported in the future, and non-
fiction are reference books so you refer back to them. some books you can only print a few pages or none at all ….. printed book you can photocopy the page you want which is handy for cook books when you know you will get the page dirty.

i have a few books with DRM and you need special reader or software and i hate them …. and publishers don’t like pdf as it can be easily shared with friends.

my son has a kindle as he reads a lot of fiction so only reads once.

  • Who is the book signed by? Does that increase the value or decrease it?

The author. Value is in the eye of the beholder.

depends if it goes onto be a classic ….. great expectations signed by charles dickens price goes up ….”It” signed by stephen king price goes up ….. easy gardening by don burke , not sure …..

      • Signed books by Don B might be in demand at the moment - by those wanting to destroy them🔥

I produced a book (if it could be called that - a compilation of jokes) while I was at Uni - purely for the $. To publicise it, I released "excerpts" - a few jokes (not from the book) I knew would stir up controversy. It was purely a publicity stunt before release.

Many people far too easily believe what they want to believe. Some called for the book's destruction, so it was a sales hit. I released a mocked up special book burning edition front cover, safe book burning guide insert, with an increased price. Protesters realised they had been used - I apologised. The Uni printer could not admit they had printed the controversial book so could not bill me. A financial success.

But people wanted signed copies of that book & my other writing. They were just as manipulated by public opinion & promotion as the protesters. In their minds they had built up an importance in my writing it definitely lacked. I had my misguided devoted fans. I told them they were crazy. Unfortunately strongly held beliefs are hard to change, no matter how wrong they are.

I was shocked, but not surprised by the outcome. It was an interesting & probably unethical experiment I never repeated. It was not planned to be that, but unfolded as events changed. I went on to lecturing in writing at that Uni (before completing my Science degree) & picked up another degree - in Psychology.

I am wary of signed copies as a sales gimmick.

(Reference to previous comments criticising PJC's bad 'manners' asking for changes to deal title in an earlier deal.)
