Even the best of portable a/c's are inefficient in what they do & they're very power hungry. But it's better than nothing on a hot night.

Eh, we had one that was so loud we preferred being hot. (Not that it cooled the room on a 40 degree day anyway).

Portable ACs are awful as a rule. They sell mostly just because people who've never used one can't believe they could really be as bad as they are (until after they buy one and try to use it).

If you're renting, and so can't just install a real split or ducted system, a better option might be to set up one of those window units. They're a little better.

I've also seen portables that have an outside compressor unit, like a split system has, that you can put on a balcony and connect through a window. That theoretically should be quieter and cooler than an integrated unit, but for some reason they are hard to find.

      Here's some general info:

  • anyone been to costco saw good and decent ones? is it true the ones that we can put water and ice are not good for our health/lung as we will be breathing in mist from the air constantly?

    • I've never heard that - don't people specifically buy humidifiers to put water vapor in the air because dry air is bad?

Humidifiers are used whenever you want to treat problems related with dryness of skin / mucous membranes (e.g you have dry cracking skin)

However, generally speaking, you won't be using a humidifer in summer as the air in Sydney is generally humid enough and high humidity decreases the rate at which your body cools down using evaporative cooling.

If anything, you want the opposite: you want the air to be dryer in summer, but more humid in the winter.

On the topic of coolers that you put water in — these operate on the principle of evaporative cooling by passing hot, but dry, outside air through a piece of wet material (cooling pad), as the hot dry air goes through the wet cooling pads, It'll want to absorb the moisture. Some of the heat energy in the air is expended as the liquid water is turned into water vapour. This cools down the air being blown in and will give you a slight cooling effect.

Evap coolers only work when the air outside is a) hotter than the air inside your room and b) the relative humidity of the air is low. You won't be seeing many people buy evap coolers in Sydney since the air is not usually that dry in the summer.

The perfect time to buy one is before summer. You are now at the mercy of retailers who know you are desperate to avoid the heat.

Do you want cheap or discount or cheap discount? lol

why not just buy lots of Connoisseur ice cream? it will work out cheaper

  • If your renting & have no other choice then buy else you'll definitely regret buying it. Get a misting fan instead

Probably the worst purchase I've ever made. Just don't.

  • Does anyone have any feed back in the Aldi and Bunnings ones?
