Are There Any VDSL Modem ONLY for Purchase?

I am trying to get a (cheap) spare VDSL capable modem, just that function, for speed/sync testing (and to help identify if the problems are with the ISP or with the local gear).

I cannot seem to find any available, everything is modem/router combination.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Cris

  • Don't think I've ever seen a modem that not all so a router? Why would a normal person want that, because most would want to connect multiple devices to the modem, and want to talk between those devices.

We had a lot of internet dropouts with Telstra. When I say dropouts, I mean the Telstra modem (their top model) was telling me that the line and sync were never lost, but my Firewall was telling me that it was losing uplink. And even when connected directly to the modem, I couldn't ping anything outside the house during these short dropouts. Talking to Telstra was useless, they said there was no problems on their end, and they can see no dropouts on their end, and all they ever did was change the line settings, which I'm pretty sure was code for do nothing.
Anyway I was thinking that maybe it was the modem itself, since it did it 95% of the time when people were home. So I bought a new Archer D9 for $100, and bingo, not a single dropout since.

  • You should check out the Sagemcom F@st VDSL modem routers, typically they are given free of charge to NBN users but most tech-savvy people end up tossing them out or selling them for very cheap because they are mediocre devices.

They are actually cheaper than standalone VDSL wired modems.

    • Thanks, I actually have a spare telstra gateway, I was just trying to find something simple, to hook my test laptop onto to check the VDSL link…

      • Hmm. Well, I don't know of any 'simple' or pocket sized VDSL modems, but I only know of cheap VDSL modems. Perhaps try asking the Billion representative on Whirlpool. They might recommend one of their own products,

There's also an ex-ASUS network guy

        • BiPAC 8600SM is available in UK, does not seem to be available around here..
          Thanks for the comment though

  • I found this:
    https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/fttn_registered_modem_router
Which seems pretty comprehensive but still NO MODEM ONLY!
A simple modem would connect to a router only WAN port so it does not need more than one port…

    • Draytek vigor 130.

and this single port VDSL modem only from Billion.

      • While the Vigor is probably the best option - it is not cheap :)

        • you want cheap? just get tg799vac from ebay

modem ONLY =/= cheaper than modem router

no one manufacture modem ONLY anymore (except a few)

        • @phunkydude: Fair enough

        • @cristtos: My local nbn installer uses a tg799vac with custom firmware to test VDSL connectivity. Unfortunately the custom firmware is not available to the public.

        • @alvian:yeah, I used it with the original firmware to check which end is the problem.
it seems that my fritz is on the fritz (hehe)

        • @cristtos: Only some VDSL modems authenticate the way the NBN does, so best to check if others have got it to work on FTTN NBN first.

Also, if you use one in bridged mode, the device behind it (that handles the routing) needs to be NBN ready. AVM make a number of fritz devices, the older ADSL equipped ones don't have user-configurable settings for things like PPPoE or PPPoA. However they may still have user set options (that hide these complexities) and work with cable and NBN FTTH/HFC/FTTP modems (such as the 7272, that works with all except FTTN (VDSL) modems).

        • @zerovelocity: Thanks!
