Gumtree - Can You Find out The Name of The Person Who Has Viewed Your Ad?

I recently had someone come to my house from a Gumtree ad and I believe he was casing the place.

There would have been two ads on Gumtree that he would have looked at. Is there anyway to find out the name of the person who has viewed your Gumtree ad? I have given his mobile number to Crimestoppers just in case.

What crime did you advise to Crimestoppers? Aggravated looking?

I must admit I seem to live in a very different world to a lot of OzBargain who encounter criminals behind every interaction, need video recordings of their every move and yet seem to be willing to hand over cash for discount giftcards etc.

For the record, I don't think there is any way to get Gumtree logs without a court warrant unless you are a law enforcement or government agency.

I recently had someone come to my house from a Gumtree ad and I believe he was casing the place.

What does come to my house mean?
Did he knock on the door? Was he peeking through the window? Where did he get your address from?

And how do you know that he's from Gumtree?

    • +18

He was wearing a Blinky bill costume.

So you're totally comfortable with stalking the guy for a crime he hasn't committed? What are you, Minority Report?

  • +2

No, you cannot find the names of people who have viewed your ad. Once a crime has occurred I am sure the police can work with Gumtree to investigate.

    • Welllll…. Access his meta data…

If you do, just report their phone number to Crime Stoppers and say you believe the goods maybe stolen.

  • It was probably Dale Kerrigan looking for a bargain

Just tell the Feds he was dreamin' and casing my joint with the fake chimney

  • Hello OP. Sorry to hear about your bad experience. It might be worthwhile contacting Gumtree and making them aware of the problem as well as your local p;olice. That way if they notice a pattern they will have your details for further assistance.

Also, out of interest, what was the type of item? Christmas time is definately a time to be extra weary, so better be safe than sorry.

      local p;olice

Please don't waste the lac resources on imaginary offences.

Christmas is definitely a time that people get weary with all the partying. It’s also a time to be wary with people going on holidays leaving unattended houses.

Its not quite clear whats happening.
Did you give him your address or did you leave it on your ad? (you should never do the latter)
How do you know he is from Gumtree?
Theres no way to know who viewed your ad, you don't even need an account to use gumtree as a buyer.

    Short answer would be no.
    Long answer would be nooooooo.
All you need for a Gumtree account is an email address.
Out of curiosity though, what led you to believe that he was casing your house?

    • Was looking to purchase the bookcase the op is selling

OP. can I have your address so that I can come over and talk to you so I can understand the situation in person and help you?

  • You mean you have your complete address specified in your listing description? I am pretty sure Gumtree doesn't display it by default.

Don't bother with gumtree, this is above their heads. The person you need to call is the Prime Minister.
Ol' Malcolm is going to want to know about this

    • ^This one, mate. In case there were more than one view on the ad, then it's time to ring ol' Trump.

  • Have you tried searching for the number on Facebook? Depending on whether the person has it attached to their account and on their privacy settings, their profile could come up. If attached, type in the number, and the profile will usually pop up as a suggestion.

    • Yes tried that thanks, not attached.

man brutal comments for a legit question, i've dealt with enough "odd" people from gumtree to know the exact situation, came to look at the washer or whatever was listed but spent more time looking at everything valuable and the doors whilst scratching his arm sores and jittering slightly, as gumtree like to try and hide as much as possible you have zero recourse though, best you can do is write down as much details of the guy as you can remember just in case.

this is also why you should never sell from your house, met them somewhere, like a police station parking lot

Yep some pretty brutal comments, thought this would have been a 'safe' place to ask a legit question. Obviously not but thanks to those of you who answered politely and helpfully.

  • Pop his mobile number in Facebook and search, 90% of the time it works ;)

  • I agree with furys12 brutal comments for a legit question.
I too have recently had a weirdo sending me messages about an add.
When I didnt reply, because I hadn’t seen, he closed the conversation.
Thank god I didn’t have my phone number listed, which he had complained about.
Fury’s gives good advise. Meet them somewhere.
Fir now, I also agree that if there’s a problem, contact gumtree.
    Good luck.

  • Gumtree actually can find out who has looked at an add if they used the contact links on Gumtree (eg messenger or email links only not by calling the number or messaging outside the Gumtree app). Source: I prosecuted someone for selling something illegal on Gumtree and this was how we found others who had previously purchased the item before the remaining items were seized. However to find out this information from Gumtree I needed a search warrant so Gumtree will not provide this information to a random member of the public due to privacy laws.

  • Good on you! To access someone's ph no you need to log in to reveal the no. I wonder if this is accessible via warrant? That is if a person doesn't use false id.

    • But to get a warrant you need evidence of a crime and you need to be authorised under legislation that gives you the right to that information. So as a member of the public you cannot get a search warrant. The police could apply for one but they would first need some evidence linking the person to the crime and the crime needs to be committed first.

Better start tracking all Google Earth users, I think they are casing my house. The other day when it was really hot I got home from work and went to go for a swim and there was water missing from my pool.

    • I just snuck over to your place and uh, added some extra liquid to your pool…

  • Thanks for that. Did you also blow in my pool pony it looks a little over inflated?

  • "Blow." Yes. That term will suffice…
