Best Speaker Solution for My Personal Use

Hi all,

I like to consider myself an avid music listener, as it always helps me with my mood, and reactions, especially in certain unforgiving times. I'm looking to upgrade from my $50 iPod dock, but there is one problem. I am unsure what solution I should make. Looking at the Sonos Play:1 (I think?) would be a good "HiFi" solution for my bedroom (bear in mind I'm only 16). But I do wish to take a speaker out with me, and have it portably. For that I'm looking at the UE Boom/Wonderboom. In theory there is no point in purchasing 2 speakers, but I do notice that Sonos does put an emphasis on clarity, and continuous audio playback, something that UE seems to lack with bluetooth connectivity. However, at a minimum cost price of $330, that doesn't seem very feasible on a student budget.

My message to you ozbargainers, what do you think the best solution will be for me? Should I splurge and get the two speaker solution, or do I save more money and get the UE Boom, using that with me in my bedroom for ambient music.

Regards,

  • If you're looking for portability, I'd avoid Sonos. Whilst you can set it up to play automatically from line-in, it's benefits are being at home as part of your network.

  • UE Wonderboom for about $80 on special - bargain

  • With Sonos you are paying for the network-ability and features, not sound quality.
They also require power, which limits their portability. From my understanding there is no battery option, which kind of defeats the purpose of a wireless speaker

How much are you looking to spend?

Sony cube speaker is pretty good for what it is, cheap too.

I like the Sony ones. Played with them at JB and they sound a lot better than my UE Boom speakers. Wish I bought them instead.

I’m hoping by that you wanting to carry it around, you don’t mean playing your music out loud of public transport …

With Sony, depending on what ones you get, you can get two so you can set them up as a left speaker and a right speaker.

  • Thank you everyone for your comments, what about if I purchase a UE Boom 2 as a main speaker, I saw that JB charges $149 for it. That will be the best thing for my situation. I can always chrome-cast my phone to our unnecessarily large stereo speaker. However it's impracticality outweighs the benefits - hence the reason why I'm looking at wireless speakers.

  • JBL XTREME ALL THE WAY!! Flip 4/Charge 3 are also very very good, way better than UE BOOM 2 in terms of sound

I ended up getting a JBL Flip 4 as my speaker. Good one to use on my desk with my PC to play sound, or even for background music.
