Shower Floor Grout Is Crumbling - Should I Be Worried?

The other night I was cleaning the shower and using the grout brush to scrub the shower floor what I thought was a tiny bit of mold.

I scrubbed it for a few seconds then I realised it was actually a gap where the grout has started to crumble. Should I be worried that water could penetrate through this gap and may cause some sort of internal damage or am I just being a worry wort?

  • yea you will want to patch that up sooner rather than later as yes there will most likely be water getting through it underneath. You can buy tubes of grout at hardware stores, or even just use coloured silicone

How old is the bathroom? If newer, it should be waterproofed under the tiles. If it is older, get it fixed straight away so you don't get any leak damage.

Grout is cheap and easy to fix.

    • The house is 4 years old but this was an ex display showroom. We moved in last November

If it was correctly prepared such as waterproofed before tiling then it's not a major concern other then aesthetics. Obviously you still need to patch it up.

  • I posted a topic similar to this a while ago, I had a very similar problem. I had to get the whole shower re-grouted because the original builder did a really expletive job… my advice is to get it fixed ASAP!!!!

You can buy mini tubes of premixed grout from bunnings - it should work fine. But do it when the shower is dry and leave it in there for half a day to a day before using again.
