Anyone being charged twice by Commbank? Once when transaction is pending and again when it changes?

So I just came back from a trip overseas and was happy using my card: Visa gives great exchange rates and I can see the available funds being deducted by the pending amount.

Now once back, I started seeing that my available funds get deducted by the same amount again, even though it should only deduct international transaction fees.

Called their call center, they said "if it only shows once, it has only been deducted once".

That would be easy to believe, if it weren't for the fact that I only left about $20 in the transaction account for all the international transactions fees since I am using another bank for my everyday purchases.

Googled it and found people with the same issue:

Anyone can advise what should be done next? I feel robbed…

Call them again and explain what is happening clearer so the person on the phone understands. Tell them you understand what they are saying but do not believe that what they are saying is what has actually occurred.

In all honestly I expect that Commbank is correct and you are just reading your statement wrong, but you never know I guess.

When i buy something, say i have a credit limit of $100, the item is $10, it will go in my pending transactions and my account will say $90 available but my balance will show as $0. Then, when the transaction goes through, my available amount will still be $90 and my balance will become $10.

I don't believe that you are being charged twice. I have been with CBA for a looooong time and never had something deducted twice. I have OCD so check my credit card several times a day against a spreadsheet and would be very aware if it is wrong.

A true OzBargainer would use 28 Degrees/Coles Rewards MC/Bankwest Platinum/Citibank card overseas, not CBA bank card.

    • Completely agree. I haven't paid an international transaction fee for more than 10 years.

  • Most banks don't bother in showing "pending" transactions. It only causes anxiety.

The pending amount will drop off when matched with the "real transaction" With overseas transactions the amounts can vary and so won't make a perfect match.
Pending transactions will automatically be dropped from your account after a certain time period.

Wait and see if it gets actually debited to your account, before you claim that you have been robbed.

However you are paying more fees than you need to.

    international transaction fees

  • These transactions are currently being processed. Some transactions may temporarily appear in both your pending transactions and transaction history (e.g. hotel deposits, overseas transactions and uncleared cheques). Your available funds will reflect any pending transactions, however they're not included in your account balance. The merchant name shown in the transaction description may change when processed.
