8th Gen i5 Vs i7

Hi, would like a couple of opinions on the benefits of i5 vs i7.
Mainly how much extra would warrant paying for an i7>i5 and how much of a real world difference they are ( have done some of my own research already as well)
Looking to purchase a laptop in the next few days.
Also to help narrow it down, specifically the 15W 8th gen cpu's that are slowly rolling out in models such as the DELL XPS 13 and HP ENVY etc

Uni student for coding and engineering software and also casual leisure use as well

  • "Tell me which I should buy, but I won't tell you what I'm going to use it for."

    • 😂 adjusted

  • just a heads up, the new XPS are coming out in January/February or something like that.

    • I've read that it's more of a design refresh, but most likely same internals with the addition of a TB3 port to replace barrel charger port.Thank you though

      • yeh most likely. heard it might be a lot thinner too which is important.

also means that the current XPS models should reduce in price as the new ones come out, though not sure about that.

guess if you can wait a month or so then might be worth waiting. up 2 u

        • 2 questions for you, with the thinner design smaller battery? And is $250 price jump justifiable for i5-i7

          @jrivas:

not sure if its smaller battery, you would think battery time would be improved over an older model given the amount of time they have had to work on it.

and $250 for me is def worth going up to an i7 just for it to be smoother/ less lag.
the way i look at it, you will most likely use the laptop for about 4 years. which is why the $250 investment is worth it, since you're not buying a laptop every year or so. just my opinion of course.

omg laptops are basically all the same in performance unless you get a quad core.

Stop worrying about nonsense like this. You can use a 10 year old computer and still get through uni

The new i5-8250U is fast and I believe the first mobile I5 to have 4 Cores (8 thread). so has really narrowed the gap on the I7. You won't really notice that much difference between it and a i7-8550U. In most tests the 8th Gen I7 is only 10% faster than the I5.

I am biased though. I just got an Asus notebook with the i5-8250U and the CPU simply idles or downclocks heavily most of the time in general during web surfing / movies. and barely ticks over off idle playing HD video. It is almost overkill for a web surfing machine. It would be fast in most coding and engineering software packages (within reason)
