Bosch or Ryobi Sliding Mitre Saw - which model?

Hi, I was given $200 bunnings gift card as a X'mas gift. Have always wanted to buy a sliding mitre saw for small projects such as:

  1. Making picture frames
  2. Making typical house furnitures like tables, cabinets, etc.

Not going to use this to cut lumber for house construction for instance. But need the cut to be accurate.

I reckon Bosch and Ryobi ones are good. But which model please?

Thanks

  • I'm interested in this too.
My research, though, is that if you want accurate cuts you have to shell out a bit more and grab a Makita.
But I've also been told to not overthink it… so much of it comes down to skill and experience with the tool.
Apparently things like the models with a laser guide also get clogged up with saw dust and/or fall out of alignment, so they're not as useful as we would like.
Edit: I have no experience with mitre saws; but I would consider Bosch green and Ryobi as on the same level for powertools in general… I would go the cheaper/better warranty model.

      • should be alright. has everything you need

        • Thanks. Will the lack of dual bevel be a deal breaker u reckon?

        • @jeeg:
Not sure tbh, but it might be up to what you're using it for.
I think you can just flip your piece of wood to the other side and make the cut that way
Maybe a little more time consuming, but depends of you will use it a lot?

        • @Lawagetas: Thanks mate.

        • @jeeg:
No worries mate. Let us know how you go!

          @Lawagetas:

Just a note to say I have bought the Ryobi sliding mitre saw + Irwin 80T blade for fine cutting. So far so good!

  • I have a bosch one and it does the job. Both brands are about the same in terms of quality so maybe have a look at both and work out which one you prefer.

Makita def better but you pay for it so depends how often you will use it

    • Bosch 254mm one is $399. Ryobi 254mm is $299. Which is better? Both are sliding mitres.

      • Bosch is dual bevel. Cannot find if ryobi ius as well

        • Thanks for pointing that out. I think you are right. The ryobi is not dual bevel.

Checking through ProductReviews.com, the bosch and the ryobi both have poor reviews! :(

  • is a sliding mitre saw ok for this kind of thing over a table saw?

    • It’s sort of a bit of both, but IMO small table saws are just too unwieldy. If it were me I’d go with a compound/crosscut and a circular saw with a fence. You’re going to get much better cuts with a circular saw and a fence than with a small table saw IMO

I think with any saw you need to calibrate it to be perfectly accurate. I recently bought an Ozito for reno work and it's fairly close but not perfect. Before I build the deck I'll attempt to calibrate it.

  • YMMV - but i bought a mitre saw from bunnings, then needed a table saw as I wanted to "rip" longer peices of wood.

After spending the last month making window frames and all sorts - recommend you get both (or one that is multipurpose such as a triton table)
