Best Way to Safely Sell Motorbike on Gumtree?

Hi All,

I'm currently selling my motorbike on Gumtree and was looking for some advice on how to safely (as in, to prevent them just riding off on it) allow test-drives of the bike to the potential buyer?

Is taking the licence while they ride enough? Would buyers generally agree to this? Or should I be doing something else like photographing them on my bike?

    People are doing runners with phones like this poor bastard and you're thinking of letting them literally ride off solo to "test" your bike?

    My $50 fake ID is looking like a pretty good investment again if it can score me a sweet bike.

    Licence + something valuable (e.g car keys or phone) is normally enough.

    When I bought my first bike, I went with a colleague as I had no road experience yet. My colleague offered his licence and car keys but the seller was cool and said licence only was fine.

    If it's a LAMS bike, most likely there's gonna be at least two people. An L plater (buyer) and a buddy (Confident L plater, P plater or fulls). Your choice to take ID/valuables from one or both.

    I've sold few of me bikes on gumtree and bike sales. I've got a pretty simple logic:
    My insurance doesn't cover an unknown person on my bike, in case of an accident or theft. If you still want to test ride, I want to be assured that you are here to purchase and not a tyre kicker. So, you sign to pieces of paper agreeing to pay me in full for the bike's asking price. Limit of how long and distance you have for your test ride. If you drop it, the bike is yours and the money is mine. Then hand over the cash before you go test riding. Everyone who was serious enough about buying the bikes had no problem with me terms. They usually came around and did an initial inspection. Then returned back with the money to test ride and purchase.

      Urgh, re-reading this post, I really need to fix my phone's autospell.
      'to' instead of 'two'… 'me' instead of 'my'. This is a nightmare for the grammar OCD person in me!

        This!! And get a portable GPS tracker and put it under the pillion sit.
        Taking license or car keys will not do much.
        Fake license, stolen car, give a mate the spare key and get him to pick up car etc.
