Best $300~$500 Laptop for Uni?

Hi guys,

i'm going into uni next year and need a laptop, but i don't want to spend too much because i have a PC at home. I only need to computer to take notes and watch videos.

Chromebooks seem interesting to me but i don't know which one to get, or if i should even get one.

Thanks a lot!!!

You won't get very good Windows laptops for under $300, but you could buy a Dell Inspiron 11 3000 series for a cheap 'netbook' experience.

It won't be very nice to use for long periods of time with a 1366 x 768 display, but it is the best $300ish laptop you can buy.

Otherwise, HN and TGG are selling craptops with Pentium CPU's, 4 to 8 gigs of RAM, 5 hour battery life and 15.6 inch 720p displays with mostly plasticky builds and spinning 5400RPM rust for around the $400~500 mark.

For that amount, you could also get a used or refurbed Dell Latitude or Lenovo ultrabook from eBay, with a 3rd or 4th gen Core X series CPU and full HD displays, the downside is that 2nd hand laptops will generally have poor battery lives and you'll need to hunt down a spare battery to replace it.

You can get a Surface RT and keyboard for 150-200 2nd hand, if its purely for note taking, youtube ect.

      • Why everyone love horrid chromebooks that have just as slow cpu's as a 4 year old surface

    • At the school where I work I've given out a couple of these devices to students who require a device at school and it has worked extremely well. One was previously used by a woodworking teacher and the RT has survived in an extremely dusty environment for years.

If whatever you need can be accessed via internet explorer or in the Microsoft Office Suite then you should be absolutely fine.

Do you want a touchscreen? Im guessing not since you didnt mention it.

If it was me i'd get something secondhand.

Look at thinkpads on ebay, lots of options under $500. Just consider you might want a new battery.

It's really the only decent option at that price level (or some used but you would need big luck). Ask your uni if they support google apps/chromebooks on their IT first to help make your decision.

I think there are less chromebooks available in Australia but a quick search of reviews says that this is a good option. Take a look at some reviews.

  • A basic chromebook can be had for less than $250 (with 13.3 inch screen)
