Worth Buying a PS3?

Hi Ozbargain,

So recently I noticed that the price of a used PS3 with some games has gone down to around $130.

Should I get a PS3 this late? The price seems good enough already for a blu-ray player with some bonus games. I am not into most multiplayer games so quiet/closed servers is not a big deal to me.

I looked at games and it seems like the prices are quite reasonable for secondhand. (with EBs current boxing day sale) How about digital prices?

What model should I get? There's a lot of talk about backwards compatibility. I have some PS2 games but I really haven't given them a thought in years. I'm leaning towards the later slim models because I think they will have less trouble with cooling if I would put them in the TV cabinet.

Finally are there any other expenses that go with getting a PS3? Must have accessories or games?

Thanks

LOL dont bother, just add another $150 and get a PS4

    • The games would be much more expensive though, right? I could probably get a good library going on the PS3 for that price.

dont just think of the now, think of the next 5 years, and the quality of the graphics, and its just old

just my opinion though, i only got a PS4 like last year and I barely play it apart from sports games

Go for it. My PS3 gave me a lot of good gaming years - heaps of really great games are available. You will find now a lot of people clearing their game collections for about $5 a game on gumtree.

Mind you, we are already into the 4th or 5th year of the PS4 as well so it has plenty of cheap games as well. Sadly the PS4 isn’t backwards compatible but they have remastered a lot of good PS3 games.

The choice is yours, buy what you can afford. They’re both awesome systems. We’ll probably see a PS5 in 2019 or 2020.

    • Thanks. I'm thinking that I will jump on a listing which has a few games that I like. Seems like most people that are selling only having racing or FPS games… (Although I suppose the lack of variety in their library could be the very reason that they are selling)

Make sure to play Portal and Portal 2 and get Beyond Good & Evil on PSN (it is originally a PS2 game). Oh and Spyro (first one) if you never played it, and Abe's Oddysey and Exoddus (PS1 games). Those are the only PS games I enjoyed (mainly used mine as a media server before the advent of apple TV etc).

No harm in buying a PS3 as long as you know it will only be worth less over time and you'll probably never sell it (by the time you want to sell it you'll get so little that the effort isn't worth it). No need to spend extra on a PS4 unless there's at least 3 or 4 games you'd want to play

  • Just a heads up that the fat (original) ps3 is the only one that's backwards compatible with ps2 discs. The slim and super slim can only play ps1 discs

    • Not all phat ps3,s are compatible pretty much the 60gig and some of the 80gig ps3,s are ps2 compatible.

But my opinion dont bother goin for backward compatible as them ps3,s are known to overheat and get the yellow light of death personally would be aiming for the 120gig/160gig or the 320gig slim.

Not sure on the ultra slim but im sure they look cheaply made.

Also just a heads up you should be able to get them a lot cheaper if you hunt around seen one the other day on Ocau goin for $50 with some games and a controller.

    • True, but most PS2 games worth playing are on PSN aren't they?

I really want a PS3 too but I feel like I’m too late. I have a PS4 Pro and I just wanted a PS3 to play some old classics on there.

Go for it, and maybe mod it if your going to play offline games
