Highlights:
Image Stabilizer
Ideal for handheld work IS Image Stabilizer allows use of shutter speeds up to 3-stops slower with no perceptible increase in image blur.
Fixed Aperture
With no change in aperture over the full focal length range photographers can set exposure at the widest aperture and zoom through to 105mm without slowing shutter speed.
Super UD and Aspherical Lens Elements
Constructed with one Super-UD glass element and three aspherical lenses this lens minimizes chromatic aberration and distortion. The result is excellent picture quality even at wide apertures.
Ultrasonic Autofocus Motor (USM)
Ring-type USM (ultrasonic motor) uses ultrasonic frequency vibrations to drive responsive near-silent high speed auto focus. Good holding torque stops the focusing lens group with precision without overshoot. Full time manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF.
Super Spectra Coatings
Optimized Super Spectra lens coatings and lens element shaping suppress flare and ghosting - more prone to occur with digital cameras due to reflection off the image sensor. Coatings also help achieve true color balance and increase contrast for vivid hi-fidelity images.

New low. Confirmed very good lens.

Great versatile lens, hard to go wrong at this price.

Amazing price and generally great lens IMO. Just watch out for inconsistent aperture - loses 1 stop on tele end.

What do you mean? Isn’t it constant F/4 from 24 down to 105mm?

      • Yes it is a constant f4. But if you shoot video or do an exposure test using something like a waveform monitor you will see exposure drop at the tele end. The 1 stop may be an exaggeration so apologies for that (though I have seen it on my copy) but it's well documented that it looses light transmission at the tele end. Here is one discussion about the issue https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4016235#forum-post-57…

        • I had a read at the link you posted. Are you sure you don't have a faulty lens?

        • @GregFiona: quite sure. it's a problem with most zoom lenses esp those with slower apertures (ie f4) - there are many similar reports on this lens but it's really only an issue if you use it for video.

  • Is this grey stock?

    • Yes, from Singapore.

  • Even cheaper than in HK

Anyone tried to adapt this lens on Sony mirrorless by Sigma MC-11? How is the autofocus?

  • -6

Mkii is better. I wouldn’t waste my time on this. May as well get the stm 24-105

    • It might be better but is it really worth double the price compared to this older revision ?

      • see my reply below. I would go v1 any day, it's lighter. and cheaper!

        • Thank you, great read too.

spoken very highly of, this particular lens (not v.2).

however too heavy for my liking. I would get 2 faster and lighter primes to cover wide end (little need for zoom on this end of FLR, just step closer or away and that's it), and a dedicated light zoom that will reach beyond 200mm, and still be lighter than this lens.

however if weight is not your concern, it's an exceptional lens at this price.

in my world however I call these lenses jack of all trades master of none. they are cool if you don't like changing lenses, and they will last, but you will never be happy with it. not fast enough, not light enough, not long enough to catch a bird. just a meh lens with a Red Ring to keep you happy.

      • The weight and speed are giving me pause, even though the price is superb. And a good all-rounder would probably be quite useful. Got a wide prime you could suggest for around the same price?

        • full frame or crop?

        • @kasaresj: Hey both, I'm rocking several generations of Canon bodies but most of my lenses have not been keeping my lens game strong.

        • @Aeongrave: well, I cannot tell much about full frame, as I never had one. just can't justify an expensive hobby! not that I can't afford one :)

I have a 1.6 crop, and here's my current primes:
          - Canon EF-S 24mm F/2.8 STM pancake prime
          - Canon EF 40mm F/2.8 STM pancake prime

EF-S 24 pancake is a perfect general purpose prime for 1.6 crop.
EF 40 pancake is the best portrait lens for 1.6 crop (sorry 50 F/1.8, I didn't like ya). works on full frame, too, but it's a general purpose prime on full frame.

you may spit at the screen at this point, but my main priorities are optical sharpness and weight! the pancake lenses excel at both, and F/2.8 is more than enough for most circumstances. Build quality is solid, both are ridiculously light and small, you will never notice they are there. Both can be had around $200 new on eBay with current promos.

For full frame portrait lens, you absolutely have to get the Canon EF 85mm F/1.8 USM. There's no better lens for portraits on full frame, full stop.

        • @kasaresj: Yeah I've nabbed that 24mm pancake prime for the 50D, it's a lovely piece of gear.

I've been through that many 50mm lenses over the years… killed maybe 5 of the 1.8's and a couple of 1.4's. Desert dust, live shows and a propensity for overindulgence has not historically done my gear any favours. For those same reasons, L-glass could be a blessing and a burden.

Picked up a second-hand 5DmkII on the ultra-cheap recently though and the only thing I own that fits on it is a 50mm 1.8, which is actually a much nicer angle on a full-frame than a crop, but I'm looking to upskill in the landscape department so I'm gonna need something in the 17-24mm region before too long.

  • Hummm….. currently owned EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Not sure if i should add this one to the bag with extra zoom range..

Or maybe I should save up this money for 50mm lens…

    • I'd skip it. You'll miss those extra 8mm on the wide end (on the wide end each mm counts!), and the added weight will make you feel guilty :D
17-40 is not a bad keeper. Add an 85 1.8 for portraits, or a longer zoom. No need to duplicate FLR.

      • Ah cool!
So in this case, would you prefer 85mm over 50mm?
I'd love to get both portraits and zoom lens. Going to be a while thou after Boxing Day sale haha

        • are you full frame, or crop?

        • @kasaresj:

Corp (80D) likely to upgrade to full frame in 2 yrs or so. :))

        • @McBanny: why wait? there's a deal or two on original 6D, around 1300 :) cheap as chips, and very decent camera still!
as for the lens, on a crop a fast 40 or 50 would be ideal for portraits. 40 2.8 stm pancake is a good option, quite versatile. 50 1.4 would be a better dedicated portrait prime, but that's not a lens you would leave on all the time. 85 1.8 is a great lens, a bit too long, but it's fast! you can make amazing portraits with it, if you step back, it's perfect for taking pictures of unsuspecting kids on crop, and it will make a wonderful portrait lens on full frame when you upgrade! so looking into the future, I would get 40 2.8 for portraits on crop, and 85 1.8 for portraits when you upgrade to full frame, and 40 will be your perfect walk around lens then!

@kasaresj: I got the 6D MK II around $1800 last month. Digidirect had it $2150, pricematched at HN(sticker price $2999 LOL), minus $150 Canon Cashback, minus $200 using my 2 AMEX cards! Very happy with this camera(my first FF). What makes this purchase even more enjoyable are all the negative reviews :)

          @kasaresj:

Reason for waiting? Prob non hahahaha feels like playing around with 80D a bit more and invest on the lens for a bit.

I'll keep my eyes open for these lens while saving up.

          @GregFiona:
          That's a decent deal!!
The best deal I had was my 17-40mm lens lol, was like 50% off after all the cash back.

  • Anyone know how long we can expect it to take to be delivered? Still showing as processing on their site

    • EDIT: I just received a refund :(

No explanation or anything. Pretty pissed off

      • Same here :-(

I've been eagerly awaiting confirmation that it had been shipped….then today I get a refund and no message or anything to explain why.

        Not Cool!!

        • That sucks!
