Need Help Organising a Fiji Holiday 3rd Week of January

Hello fellow ozbargainers; Here I am again asking for help to sort out a trip:
11 days in Fiji end of January.
First 3 nights in Pacific Harbour (getting there by local bus from Nadi???) and going scuba diving (2 days sharks in Beqa lagoon, 1 soft coral).
From here I am totally lost, Don’t want to stay locked in a pricey resort or being taken around with a herd of tourists.
We are a couple in mid 30s and we enjoy outdoor activities. Don’t mind cheap acomodation and happy to experience local stuff.
We’ll really appreciate any advice in what to do, what to avoid and of course how to save money.
What’s the best local sim card? Where to get it?
Best foods/drinks?
More scuba diving?

Thanks a lot.

    Fiji is a bad place.

    You should avoid it.

    • Thanks for your advice… very informative pffff

Aren't these questions you should be asking your travel agent?

God forbid OP should get more than one opinion, or, y'know, talk to somebody who has actually been to Fiji..

possibly the nicest place we have been…..

    • Thank you so much… it looks awesome, did you stay in the bures or the tents?

  • We stayed in a pricey resort in Denarau for a few days (big mistake.. Touristy, pricey, nothing adventurous.. could've gotten that anywhere else in the world) Best time tho was staying at an island in the Mamanucas or driving yourself around the mainland. Best snorkeling/scuba you could do is in the islands by far. Staying there tho is even more pricey. My suggestion would be to buy one of those multi tickets to go to the islands while you stay on the mainland. Not sure about the options. Some you can stay there at one spot for a night and continue on. Again, I don't know the options but I saw a lot of young crowd doing this. Party cruise or something of the likes. Once at any island you can rent the gear there.
Hiring a car in the mainland is so cheap. Lots of local services are cheap not the big names. We drove to Lautoka and explored the city and surrounds. Very easy and you get to see and experience how the locals live. We spoke to some locals along the way and they are all very friendly. We offered a lift to some people while on the dirt roads as some days are really hot. They are all friendly and you get to have a nice chat and they point you towards interesting places or to their communities.

    • Thanks for all the recommendations. We will probably look into hiring a car. Do you have any idea of how much would it cost?
We will also explore the option of staying in an island for a few nights.
Did we need to carry a lot of cash? Or credit cards are fine?

      • Are you completely useless?

Most hotels will charge you at the end of your stay to pay in one big load. For that just do credit card. I took some cash to go out and about in the towns etc. Do it as if you where doing things here in Australia. Carry some cash cos some places and people won't accept credit card like markets etc. For the big stuff just credit card. It's just less hassle to worry carrying a lot of cash around. You are in holidays so you don't need that much pressure. The bank fees in the end won't be that much. Think what your priorities are.

SIM card was about $70fjd and had about 8gb or 10gb data from memory. Vodafone shop at airport

Rent a car and you can go anywhere you like. 1 road between nadi and Suva so it's easy to drive. Google maps also.

Naviti resort has all inclusive food and drinks. Good for few days. Not far from Pacific Harbour

    • Thank you… in that case it’ll be cheaper to pay $5/day of roaming because I am already with Vodafone. Do you remember if Australian license is good enough to rent a car or an international one will be required?
