AmEx Referral with Existing Card

Hi Guys,

I couldn't find the exact answer I was looking for in other posts so thought I would ask here.

I currently have the AMEX Explorer card and was looking at getting the Plat Edge. Seeing as I am not eligible for the signup bonus due to already holding the Explorer, can I still get the referral bonus on signup? Or is that all negated to me already holding an AMEX?

  • Sorry question is not clear. Are you asking if you can get the 15K bonus for signing up to the Plat edge, even though you have an existing Explorer? Or are you trying to generate a referral of the Platinum edge (using your existing Explorer) in the hopes of getting 15K?

Amex are quite strict now, you cannot get the sign up bonus if you have an amex within the last 18 months. I have read however somewhere (from AFF, though I am struggling to find the exact post) of people still getting the 15K sign up bonus, after being transferred from the Explorer to the Platinum Edge.

    • The situation Joe describes below

  • From my experience, I started with a Platinums edge and was referred an Explorer card; my friend got the bonus for referring me, however I did not get the bonus.

    • That is what I was looking for, thanks!

I talked with a rep from Amex last night who said the opposite, will give it go anyway.

      • +1

It's not all bad though; once you get the platinum edge your points all automatically get converted to Ascent from Gateway (immediate 33% uplift in value).

The Platinum Edge & Explorer combo is the best!

        • It sure is. Well done!

        • 'Automatically' converted?

From what I have read on the forums thus far, all other anecdotes point to you have 2 different rewards programs and have to call up and get a nice rep to combine them (getting harder and harder to do now). Unless this is something new which sounds great!

        • @knobbs: At the time I applied for the card (1 year ago), the rep told me that as it’s nkt possible to have two concurrent Memberships rewards accounts (Ascent/Ascent Premium/Gateway) when you have two of these types of cards then it will always pool to the higher tier. (That secluded the Qantas and Velocity range that are on their partnered programs)

Might have changed since then but I haven’t heard of anyone having any issues.

        • @Joe146: Well sounds good, that was one of the things I was worried about having to do/if I could get it done at all. So will be keeping my eye on it when I register the card (got approved last night and got referral points on my main account). Thanks for the reply

        • @knobbs: No worries, enjoy!

    • I have the exact same experience.

  • I'm looking at signing up to the new Qantas Ultimate Amex (for the 100,000 bonus point). Does anyone have a referral they want to wing me to boost the points? Or don't they do that anymore?

  • I'm looking at getting the Explorer with 100,000 points.

What are people using the $400 travel credit for, and are they finding the $400 credit good value?

    • It's a great card, I have it (as well as the Platinum Edge).

I used the $400 travel credit to book SQ flights MEL-BLR return this July, the price that AmEx travel gives is the same price that you get on the SQ website, so you are getting a true $400 discount.
Note that the portal doesn't have LCCs such as AirAsia, Scoot, etc, so only full service airlines are included. It really is great value, on top of all the points earning capabilities.
