Any Experiences with EuroWings?

Hey Ozbargainers!

I'm looking at booking a 1-way ticket from Bangkok - Budapest, as part of a round-the-world trip I'm doing next year. For the date I'm flying, SkyScanner is telling me that the cheapest option is a german airline called EuroWings.

Was wondering if anyone had any experiences flying with them? It's a budget airline, so I'm under no impression that I'll be treated like royalty but I'm pretty happy as long as it gets me there.

Was also hoping someone might know how often they have sales - I want to fly in early June, so I'm trying to weigh up if I should wait for a sale fare or just buy now.

Any tips would be much appreciated :)

I have flown with them. No problems at all. Pretty sure they are just a low cost arm of Lufthansa. So it's like Jetstar is to Qantas.

I believe they use Düsseldorf as their hub, which isn't as nice as an airport as Munich or Berlin, but it has everything you need. But we did have to get buses to and from the aircraft. Oh well, smaller airport. Still decked out with eateries and shops, etc.

    Would 100% use them again.

    • Thanks for sharing! Looks like that flight I'm looking at connects through Cologne-Bonn

  • Before you jump the gun you might want to try a multi-trip booking for the longer legs. Just as an example: https://www.skyscanner.com.au/transport/d/syd/2018-05-01/bkk…

If you know where particular airlines fly you can design trips around these destinations to make trips much cheaper (knowing that Emirates flies to Bangkok directly from Sydney and also serves London and Budapest makes it feature in my example above - the fact they've got specials on at the moment may help…). When you consider the extra cost of food and check-in baggage it's a no-brainer if budget is the primary concern, but trips may end up longer.

    • I did try a few multi-city itineraries, but for my trip it seemed the most cost-effective way was to use LCC's for MEL - KUL - BKK - BUD - London - LAX, then fly LAX - MEL with points.

Either way, I booked my MEL - KUL - BKK ticket a few weeks ago in an AirAsia sale. I guess it helps that I'm perfectly happy to fly without checked bags or dignity

Ah, no dignity, well that changes things up a little :)

I'm so low-dignity I've never even saved points or would know how to use them. If you have, for example, Star Alliance points (covering United, Thai Airways and Lufthansa), would it cost less points to apply them to a better value multi-trip as opposed to a one-way journey?

If you've already booked the first part and have no checked bags then LCCs might be the cheaper option anyway like you say (now that we've got those Norwegian Airlines flying to the US). Might be worth booking now if prices seem good. Enjoy your trip!

        • Another thing I looked at doing - but my points are all Velocity (could convert to KrisFlyer but would incur a penalty) and when I checked, reward availability on Singapore Airlines for velocity redemption wasn't amazing for my dates.

I'm thinking I'm just going to book this leg now before prices climb any more, was just hoping someone on ozbargain might have an idea how often Eurowings do sales!

  • Germanwings Flight 9525 (4U9525/GWI18G)[5][a] was a scheduled international passenger flight from Barcelona–El Prat Airport in Spain to Düsseldorf Airport in Germany. The flight was operated by Germanwings, a low-cost carrier owned by the German airline Lufthansa. On 24 March 2015, the aircraft, an Airbus A320-211, crashed 100 kilometres (62 mi) north-west of Nice in the French Alps. All 144 passengers and six crew members were killed. It was Germanwings' first fatal crash in the 18-year history of the company.

GermanWings has now merged with Eurowings. Germanwings operated independently until October 2015, when a merger with its sister company Eurowings was started.

    • Fortunately OP isn’t flying Barcelona-El Prat and the pilot isn’t working for EuroWings anymore.
