Best Video Game Console for 4 Year Old

Hi all,

I was looking for some recommendation regarding best video console for a 4 years old and possibly the games as well. Not something very expensive please as it is the first console. I may also look into buying a used one. Your suggestions will be highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Super Nintendo Classic - simple games and controllers, cheap if you can find one in stock anywhere!

Maybe a PS3 - lots of used ones out there and still easy to find games for it.

Note you will likely get a few questions along the lines of - why buy a console for a 4 year old? I don't see the harm as long as you limit the hours of use and ensure games are appropriately rated.

My first thought was Super Nes Classic too. Given more thought though I'd probably consider a Nintendo 3DS which has a huge back catalogue of great and cheap games and is also great for travel.

maybe just a regular wii. would have a blast on wii sports ect

Isn't 4 a bit young for video games?

What about toys and good old outdoor play?

      and eat some dirt too

Ironically so many of us adults are sitting there looking at screens and dispensing this advice.

Maybe we all need to take our own advice too!

My 2 year old has started to tell me to "put your phone down" now :/

    Just no….

Nintendo 2DS - pretty cheap plus lots of backlog games, plus it plays DS games too

I installed homebrew and a snes emulator on a pink 2DS for my 4 year old - she loves it - but doesn't love that she's limited to 30 minutes per day.

I think this is the key - limiting the time they are allowed to play on them.

Something basic like this would be great until she’s 6 and surpasses you in dexterity.

Intel Core I9-7900x CPU 10 Core
        32 Gigs of G.SKILL RipJaws 3000Mhz DDR4 RAM
Samsung 960 Pro Series 1TB Ultra Fast PCI-E M.2 Solid State Drive
Western Digital 4TB Black Edition Hard Drive
        Nvidia GTX 1080 TI - 11GB
Custom Professional grade system with Video card Water Cooling
        The Corsair Obsidian 750d Tower
Seasonic Flagship PRIME Series 1200W Gold

I hate to introduce my son to any electronics, games, tv, tablets, phones etc. A few days ago I took my son to my brother's house whose kids are of similar age and they have XBOX, Gameboy, Nintendo Switch, toy robots, etc. and they play together. When we come back home my son cries and says he wants to go back and wants to play with those games and toys. I can't ask my brother to stop buying those electronics or hide them from my son. My most other friends' kids have a lot of electronics as well.

And yes, I will think about consequences of not buying anything as well. Thank you for the advice! :)

He can play when he goes to your brother's house, what's the issue?

      • +1

I think the issue was the son was crying when he got home.

      • It's not practical to stay at his house just for playing games. And he cries when he is back home.

        • That's the point.

Eventually he will get over it/stop crying.

    • LOL. When I was little a friend's mother told me to stop playing with dolls, because it was a bad influence on her kid as it wasn't a learning toy.

I've never had any game machine thing, and don't really feel like I missed out? That being said none of my friends had them either.

Nintendo 2DS is best. Many kid friendly games and they are hard to break.

  • try to see if he likes those pokemon games, nintendo 2ds and those pokemon games should keep him busy, or xbox s and a few children games

Pokémon is great, however a lot of reading is required in it.

    it's called the great outdoors

They stopped making that TV show years ago. I think you are left with Getaway these days.

    a second hand wii
very cheap and still very fun even if just wii sports or resort games

preschool children you do not need complex games

Your 4 year old doesn't need a video game console lol

If you're adamant about getting the 4yo a gaming device, I'd go with something from Nintendo. They have a larger range of cutesy type games.

But be sure to limit the kid's gaming time and introduce other activities into their life. My parents use to limit gaming to just only school holidays and public holidays. I'd like to think that I'm not struggling in life because of the fact I know how to manage myself around delayed gratification that I learnt from them (and, yes, I do game more frequently these days).

When my kids were 3-6 years old they loved playing with the LeapTV. Some actually fun educational games available for it. They have also licensed some good properties (spiderman, Disney, Pixar) and the games are well-priced.

I gave it to my kids so that they could have their console of their own in the playroom, and keep then away from my Xbox (which i thought they were too young for.)

Price is right too - $70 from COTD at the moment.

Get him a PC. then he can start learning coding too

  • Sandpit in back yard. Motor skills and imagination development.

  • Fidget hand spinners https://www.gearbest.com/fidget-hand-spinner-_gear/

Notice it's plural because the 4-year-old would want one for each hand.

  • A Nintendo 3DS, or a Switch. Great range of kid friendly games and portable.
