Love my chromebook, but all I do is surf the internet, so works fine for that!

    • Thanks. Browsing\social media with my 3.something kgs of Asus is somewhat a bit heavy for couch computing.

yeah don't do that anymore and don't miss it. Chromebook is near instant on, last for ages.

Just get one with a decent CPU/RAM combo and you'll be ok!

I don't know a lot about Chromebooks so maybe ignore me but you won't be able to use normal desktop programs without being connected to the net. Editing a website would be quite difficult unless you don't mind live editing it directly through Cpanel (personally I'd rather play with a site off line and only upload the changes once I know nothing is broken) or editing it in google docs, but that would be super awkward to try and move the file over. You might have to copy and paste the text? That would be so hard and annoying. Maybe you can save files locally, I could be wrong.

Web browsing and emails however would be fine of course.

Personally I would never buy one, they look so limited and annoying, you could buy an ok second hand proper laptop with $300.

If you didn't need any access to desktop programs I think it would be better to get an iPad or Android tablet with detachable keyboard, and then at least you have the option to upload/save photos and pdf files in your emails (does the Chromebook have a camera?) and the ability to have movies, photos and pdf files saved locally to the device.

    • Thanks.Yeah, moving files across will be pain.

Website editing will done on Cloud (3rd part platform). Don't think it will be that intensive.

They're great for travelling. Very secure and "throwable" - if it gets stolen or broken, your data is safe and you haven't lost much hardware-wise. Having a https://www.paperspace.com/ instance is good if you need full desktop or games on the road :)

  • Where to buy?

Been using Chromebook for ~3.5 years, and currently I am typing this comment on an ASUS C100P (10.1" ARM processor + 4GB RAM). I also use it for some simple website updates, running chrooted Linux via crouton. Editing scripts / web pages using vim, save into a git repo, and then deploy remotely via ssh. You can also do surprisingly a lot of things without the Internet connection (many Google drive apps for example).

    • Any performance deterioration since buying?

Chromebooks usually run faster over time when the software gets more and more optimised. However Asus C100P was pretty slow at the beginning (using low powered ARM) but now it's quite useable.

        • Agree here, usually gets a bit quicker over time. We have 3 Chrome OS devices in our home, first got one about 4 years ago.

        • @Wally Weetbix:

Wow thought it was just me, at first I too found mine a little slow, but there was this one major update it did a while back and it's been working better ever since.

Had mine for 2.5 years I think.

  • don't bother

just get that $300 dell that pops up every now and then

    light enough

Tried the Dell 1100 series, slow as and half the time does Windows update when you turn it on.

      • not sure which one is 1100, but the one here is dell 11 3000 , comes with 4gb ram and SSD as standard

never heard of SSD being slow as

        • Mine wasn't with ssd, may be diff model then

    • Yes but why get that and have to run a heavy OS that gets worse overtime.

  • I posted this a couple of days ago
