FAQ from Microsoft

After December 31, 2017, will I still be able to play music I’ve downloaded with Music Pass?
No. All Groove Music Pass content will be unplayable, including streaming music, downloaded tracks, and music videos.

After December 31, 2017, will I still be able to play music I’ve purchased from the Windows Store?
Yes, if you’ve downloaded your purchased music to your devices before December 31, 2017, you’ll be able to play it through the Groove app. After December 31, 2017, music won’t be available for purchase or download in the Windows Store or for streaming in Groove.

Does this mean I should download and back up all my purchased music?
Yes. Music will not be available for purchase or download after December 31, 2017. So, before December 31, 2017, download any tracks you’ve purchased to your devices to make sure you still have access to your music. If you want to have the songs available on your other devices, you can do that by uploading your purchased music to OneDrive or another cloud storage service. If you don’t use OneDrive or another cloud storage service, you can also transfer your purchased music from one of your devices to another device for your own personal, non-commercial use.

I'm interested to see how much I get refunded from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/322749

    I was 3 years in credit…

I'm guessing 100% of what you paid.

[Seriously though, they reduced everyone to a single 3 months from those codes]

Wow. This is exactly why I’ve never really been on board with digital buying digital media. I mean, if MS did something like this with games, what am I supposed to do with my terabytes of digital games?

Luckily the only decent games are from reputable platforms like Origin (EA), Battle.Net (Blizzard Entertainment), Steam (Valve), PS Network (Sony)

There's really nothing that's stopping these companies from doing the same thing.

Yeah, I don't expect they'll fail anytime soon.

TBH, I've avoided any proper use of cloud storage so far for this very reason.

Stuff continues to build over time and eventually it just gets so big and the little useful stuff is mixed in why mostly useless stuff. Wouldn't want to just delete everything but probably not worth the effort to move and pay for something else.
