JB Hi-Fi and Their Deceptive Sales

Its unbelievable how JB runs their sales..

The jack up the price to something absurd to begin with then give us a 20% discount and call it a massive sale…lol.

Like this mouse here $127.20 with the 20% sale discount but PC stores have been selling it for $109 for several months now. One example here. PCCG's $109 price

Same with this $199 vs this $179

The list goes on and on.

Then there is this thing called Price match, which they never do .. and then they cry about Amazon AU hurting their sales..

Just to clarify, I don't have any evidence. I just want to know everyone's thoughts on how to deal with these sorts of sales when they actually aren't.

Isnt JB supposed to be superior here ? They a lot more than PC component stores Like say PCCG/Mwave/Scorptec/PLE etc. , but their prices are super high and warranty service is really bad. How do they expect everyone to shop at JB ..

Geez, no wonder some sod on the TV kept throwing bricks through their window.

  • +3

Do you have any evidence they jacked up the price before the sale? No? Then nothing deceptive.

  • +5

I'm sure this happens a lot but the links you are showing us are 2 different stores. Not before and after sales.

I have price matched @ jbhifi a few weeks ago. after The Good Guys & Office works turned me down, jbhifi agreed.

    • With officeworks, over the phone seems to work better than over the counter. Last time I tried to price match something at OW instore, they tried to add shipping costs too even though the competition store was in the same state.

      • They really look into the fine details for the price match and will spend 10+ minutes with you . It's as if they don't want to price match it and don't want the sale.

I can't remember the reason fully. It was something along the line of a restocking fee for warranty which was like $10 and office works was $0.

        • And they don't price match "coupon" discounts (the codes you put in on checkouts). Bing Lee had a 20% off on the ebay site as a coupon, OW wouldn't match it, so bought from BL.

  • +6

Absolutely, how dare JB let another store advertise that it sells below JB's price, this is a capital offence, bring out the military, lets have a revolution, and develop an app….

While we are at it Bing Lee, is doing the same. A fridge for sale at HN & Good Guys, around $990 is part of the Bing Lee's 60th BIGGEST ever sale for $1399

    https://www.binglee.com.au/search?q=westinghouse%20side%20by…

    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/westinghouse-620l-side-by-sid…

Let the Revolution begin, how dare they profit from unsuspecting OzB's. They MUST realise they are here for our benefit not theirs.

    "It's unbelievable"

    😀

    • PCCG was just an example, The real RRP of the corsair seems to be $109 since multiple PC stores are selling it at that price. Same with G903.

      • +6

        The real RRP…

Ah yes the law according to one Ryxxi

Just because you think something doesnt make it so for the rest of the world.

A quick check with Google and all of these $109 stores have shipping costs as well, whereas JBis a bricks and mortar store.

You really should understand retail before making wild allegations.

        You said "Deceptive Sales".

You like Firerunner below says, provide no proof as to them jacking up prices.

You need to get some more life experience, the real world doesnt revolve around gaming computer parts and petulance

BTW this is why we come to Ozbargain, to find better prices rather than complain

        • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brick_and_mortar ..PCCG is B&M according to that definition. Amazon most likely woudnt be because you cant go to the warehouse to but stuff. With PCCG you can, Scorptec has multiple stores, same with PLE.

        • +4

@Ryxxi: So rather than nit pick on one small aspect of my post, what about going back to your BS headline

Its NOT deceptive unless you can prove they jacked up their prices then lowered them.

Its what everyone here is trying to tell you, but you go off on a tangent.

          1. RRP is Recommended Retail Price - look it up on wikipedia since you like that so much.
          2. RRP is not enforeceble (there is no obligation to comply with the recommendation)
          3. It gives Retailers and customers some idea of where to start in comparing prices.
          4. Retailers can charge more than the RRP. Thats their choice. If a manufacturer tries to enforce an RRP its called price fixing which is against the law.

If a Retailer (eg JB), ups the price, then lowers it, this maybe deceptive. The ACCC has rules about this, and you can go there to complain with evidence, which you so far havent done. Your perception of the RRP isnt going to cut it here or with them.

Just because JB has the lowest prices on your silly games, doesnt mean they can or will have the lowest price on the hardware to play the games. They havent deceived you.

    • "Bing Lee's 60th BIGGEST ever sale"

Haha, I'm not sure if that's a typo or sarcasm

  • +3

Just because there prices are more expensive than competitors even when they are on special doesn't make them deceptive.
You claim they jack their prices up before the sale but actually haven't provided any proof.
Have you attempted a price match? I'm sure there is a reason if they refused.
I asked for a price match with Umart but they refused because Umart has grey imports which I think is fair enough.

    • -4

I don't have any evidence sadly. But JB's prices shouldn't be that high, they have multiple stores. Shouldn't they be able to offer lower prices ?

I didn't know Umart's products are grey imports..who told you that Umart sell's grey imports and which products ?

    • I don't think Umart is doing grey imports lol. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/329449

Are you seriously comparing a store like JB HiFi to PCCG? Everyone that knows anything about computers knows that computer parts are much cheaper at computer stores.

They aren't even competitors, they are completely different types of stores. Just because they sell a couple of the same items doesn't make them even close. That'd be like saying that Australia Post is a competitor to Umart because I can get a USB stick at both.

Ok you have a point but what about games ? They refused to price match a ps4 game with the playstation store. I was told no because JB was giving me physical goods and Sony's games are digital. But then with digital u don't need to insert a disc all the time and you never loose the game as long as you have your PSN account. So both have their pros and cons.

Tried to match ps4 pro price with Amazon and they wouldn't.

      • +1

In both those cases I agree with them.

You cannot price match a digital key with a physical disc. The physical disc has had shipping and handling costs, takes up floor space, has employee wages, etc. It has to pay for its slice of the business costs too.

And Amazon don't have a physical storefront. So their overheads are lower. So why would a store that has a lot of overheads match the price of a warehouse style business?

      • You must be new here.

      • You need to price match apples with apples…

  • And den?

  • +1

JB is always more expensive than other stores, even when they have a supposed "sale". But in my experience they are willing to match prices even if they seem to good to be true, it does depend on the staff member though.

    • My experience exactly. The guy i spoke to the other day prived match Harvey which was half the price of their sale price. He didn't like harvey norman and their pricing but did it anyway.

  • Op confused with meaning of Deceptive Sales?

  • JB never jacks up their prices for a sale……………..if you went after the sale, it'll be the more expensive price.

  • heh havent shopped at Jb Hifi in years…

    they're the new Harvey Norman

Their in shop price is often more expensive than their online price, there is no reference that these price are online only.

I've use to point to it to staff and they did nothing

    • They do sell their games at lowest prices (most of the time). I have been buying games from them for a couple of years now. But anything else, why would I want to shop there. They give me no reason to do so.

    • Order online and choose to pick up in store then

      • should have added that yes, I could get the online price in store, no issue there. What I had meant by doing nothing was they wouldn't change/update the signed prices.

Its a deceptive practice against those who don't know and those that are too shy to ask.

        • That's true, and in the same vein I don't like how EB games charges more than everyone else but won't charge a normal price until you ask to price match. Taking advantage of all the oblivious mums and dads.

  • +2

You don't have to buy at JB Hi Fi

    • This should have been the first post.

JB have always been "slippery" to put it mildly… their true bargains are very scarce and they are usually the very worst place to buying anything.

See the general lack of representation here?

They sell largely to 'mooks' who dont know anything and further, they have already long stated they want to sell a 'bundle'… ie. they want people to buy a console plus 20 games plus a full priced samsung lcdtv and the monster cables and the extended warranty and flexirent it…

I generally avoid them as I know I'm wasting my time there as we (the ozbb general "we") are not their clientele.

  • Jb have the range, most things pc related can be purchased cheaper at the local pc store but the local pc store won't have the same range un stock.

  • Are you serious? Apart from sales etc, JB’s prices remain relatively consistent, some items are higher than other stores, some are the same, some are lower. It’s called shopping around in-stores and online to get the lowest price, and not being a “Mr/Mrs/Miss/Master Instant wanting it now”

  • +1

jb iffy about price matching these days- that's on a good day.

2 for 40 largely gone - many many games cost way 2 much now and are slow to discount, Hardly often quicker.

Few bargains compared to previous versions.

And way too many staff are now neither pleasant or helpful as they used to be.

That's the way it is now.

  • I was gonna pick up some Jabra Move headphones for 99$. Go to online store on boxing day and they are now $159. I don't think they were on sale before boxing day, but I could be wrong.

This thread should be flagged by JB. Its almost defamatory. They can put a price up which is usually RRP. Then you go in there and as per their mantra as noted on website ask for a better price. If you can show them a local price and get a good sales person they cam match. Many examples on here. Pc parts are better at wholesalers not bricks and mrtar places where they have high shop rental and lots of staff to pay. This post was not thought out properly before posting. It should have been to advise to go to computer shops for better deals which is what this site is about. Wish Id found it earlier. Its adicttive all these bargains and Im randomly buying stuff as its so much cheaper. Many posters with keen bargain hunting eyes to share.

  • the real Recommended Retail Price no longer exists,a lot of stores including online shopping stores still use the RRP but that RRP only exists in their own stores,so they can put a price on an item for any amount they wish and normally it is a higher price than what the item is worth and they use a certain amount in their price to use as a bartering price so you make an offer and considering it is not a ridiculous offer you should 'but it is not law; get it at a reduced price

  • +1

I don't know whether JB do this but what annoys me about some stores is the ones who always sell below the RRP but when they have sales they base the discount on the RRP even though they never sell at this price. Something might be 50% off but it's not sold at 50% off the price the store usually sells things for.

  • A lot of electrical shops. I live near a kambos and anytime I go in there almost everything (they claim) is cost price, but I squeezed their balls and got them to price match even lower than their price (I don't imagine they sold it at a loss)

Then they have these super secret (not) after hours sales. But everything is already at cost does that mean they are selling stuff at a loss (I doubt it).

I fully understand the way rebates work in retail and allow business to claim they are selling at cost price. But it's just ridiculous when everything is always on sale.

  • I bought an action cam from JB recently and the deal as listed here was that it was half-price from $399 to $199.
The deal ended, then reappeared a week or so later as 'better than half price' from $549 to $199!

Possibly $549 may have been the original, launch RRP - but nobody is selling this product at anywhere near that price.
Did they fail to tempt enough buyers with the "half-price" claim so manipulated the RRP to make the deal look better?

$199 was the best price around good price whether they upped the RRP or not.
They also price-matched a memory card for me (almost 20% below their price) with minimal fuss.
