Any App for iOS That Will Allow Me to Call Landline and Mobile Numbers Using Data Only?

I searched but I either didn't use the right keywords or there was just too many conflicting results to search through that weren't what I'm looking for. Even trying to post this topic got the possible duplicate warning and all the duplicates suggested weren't even close to what I'm asking.

I know there are certain apps you can use to call other people using data only, but the other person has to have that app and I can't convince all the people I know to download something just because I'm a cheapskate. I also would like to be able to call landline numbers if that is possible too.

It looks like this is possible in the United States and Canada with Google Voice/Hangouts.

Closest I have found is;

  1. iOS's own wifi-calling but it only works on models above the first iphone 5.
  2. Telstra Wi-fi calling…but you need an iPhone 6 or better and a Telstra internet connection, can't byo wifi.
  3. Talkatone app which you can install in Australia and some other countries…but only call US and Canada..

I only have iPhone 5 on 10.3.3

Any help is appreciated

  • Check through Settings I'm sure I saw this in there, maybe under messages.

    • Available only on models above iphone 5. 5c, 5s are fine. 5 is not :/

    Search for app called Sudo

    • Appears to be for Canada, France, UK and US only

Well shut my mouth. I just called my friend and he said it looks like I called him from Atlanta in the US. I can't find any information about the free calls to non-Sudo users though. This looks pretty cool though

  • What's wrong with FaceTime?
The alternative would be that you work around the person you're calling. If they already have an app, then you download that too. It may mean that you have a different app for a different person, but hey, that's what you have to save money.

Usually costs money if you're calling from the internet to an actual phone because it has through the telephone exchange. So you'll end up paying for those charges one way or another through a service provider.

Sudo app is free to call mobiles and landlines for certain minutes

      • Can't seem to find much on Sudo on their website, but it says in the fineprint:

SudoApp-to-SudoApp calls are always free. Limits and rates may apply to SudoOut calls.

That says to me that there'll be charges where the call isn't Sudo to Sudo and that there's a limit to the "out" calls.

Yep I believe 100 minutes to landline and mobile free every month

    • Facetime can't call non-iOS but you may be onto something with keeping a little note of who has what and using that.

I'll also see what is the go with Sudo that the other poster suggested

  • Also, wifi calling is not free. It's still carrier dependant and for use where the mobile reception isn't good. It still needs to go through your own carrier exchange and charged at the normal rates.

    Skype out?

Skype costs money to call with. Their rates are comparable to Aldi mobile and other providers

  • A lot of people already use whatsapp, so shouldn't be too difficult to call people on that.

  • Hey,
You can try nimbuzz or viber out

    • Just setting up Viber now and it appears to require the other person to have Viber installed. It's also the only app so far that the sms and phone call verification have not come through for and I have double checked my phone number

Nimbuzz verification also not coming through so maybe it's somehow something on my end

      • I'm an idiot and had the wrong sim card in. Of course the verification for these apps works.

    12VOIP

    • Can't find it on the appstore. By any chance is it called MobileVOIP now?

  • Yes, you are correct. Apologies

I've used it on and off for years. Some calls are free. I have a small amount of credit sitting there (which doesn't change. Or run out or expire) for when I need to text or call.

  • SUDO used to be free last year but they have since introduced subscriptions. You can make free landline calls in Australia as mentioned above.

    • I called someone's mobile last night on a data only sim and sent a couple of SMS's. Please tell me my friends aren't getting charged on their end or that I'm racking up some weird excess charges with my mobile provider I haven't heard about yet

I emailed Sudo last night asking what exactly the deal is and that it's probably a dumb question (Is your stuff really free for 20 hours/3000 messages a month?) but that the website was unclear to me and no-one else is talking about them - and I'm waiting on a reply that probably won't come for a couple of days at least.
