Oppo UDP-203 4K Blu-Ray Player $759.20 Delivered @ Klapp Audio Visual

450

Short of the next Oppo model up (UDP-205), this is widely regarded as one of the best 4k Bluray players (this or the Panasonic DMP-UB900 is close and has been a lot cheaper at times). The 205 has better audio stuff, but I believe the visual side of it is the same. The 203 is normally sells for about $200 more - in the $950 region. Great player for the three 4k discs around :-)

Most likely part of Klapp's Boxing Day sale so ends soon.

It will generate better picture and audio

I've both Xbox One X and the Oppo 203. Oppo wins in picture and sound.

        • Without a doubt

        • +1

          @xenoic:
          Okay, let's say it wins.
          ….however is it MUCH better?
If it isn't, then the Xbox One S is a better choice.
And the Xbox One X is a more better choice if you wanted to throw gaming into the mix.

Hooking up a Desktop PC is usually the best option, especially for higher framerate and higher resolution and higher media-type (codec) support…. however, I cannot recommend them for one reason: HDR. If you have a new TV with HDR, and want to watch some UHD BluRay media with proper HDR, look elsewhere. Windows 10 has a hack-job for HDR, its not working in many scenarios, some scenarios causing issues, and few times its working without flaw. Probably won't be fixed until 2019 as my professional guesstimate.

          @markedouglas:

Well, ain’t that a $750 pain in the backside

        • The sound and audio is digital from the player/xbox to the tv. There will be no difference if the xbox supports Dolby Vision and audio passthrough.

        • @xenoic:

          better in what way?

  • non-disc 4K HDR (not streaming either) is an option for those not willing to fork out money for a player ;)

    • Where from? Torrents?

    • I'm curious to know that too (if it's not illegal torrenting) :D

    • have you checked out labyrinth in 4k, non 4k bluray/streaming? its grainy. supposely its mastered in 4k, so WT?!?! check it out and report back to me if you dont mind. My "demo/trailer" file is grainy.

      • depends on the copy, avsforums or some other sites do reviews on the 4k blu ray discs and some movies turn out pretty crap in conversion, especially older ones. this might be the case here. i remember Crohching Tiger Hidden Dragon looked pretty bad.

Multi region/Zone mod, you can also get the same multi zone/region kit locally in Melbourne from
    http://www.gattiweb.com/bluraymod.html

a bit more expensive at AU$130.

Maybe shop locally keep guys like this going.
No association with them, I purchased a kit for my old BDP-83 way back worked a teat

I’d rather cut out a middleman if they add nothing to the process. Any fool can import something off the internet, add a percentage and charge the end user more for the same thing. Ok, for some things local support is worth paying a bit extra for, but for me, not this simple one.

Though as someone above pointed out get it from them off eBay when they have a sale, then you’re talking.

      • -3

@wfdTamar what have you got with supporting a local enterprise??
You bought your OPPO locally? your purchasing a Panasonic OLED locally
What's wrong with buying the upgrade locally?
Maybe your "the fool". and you should have imported the blu-ray and The Panasonic OLED yourself, yes you can get it cheaper.

        • +3

I’m a world shopper. Whoever has the best deal (which is not always the cheapest). Oppo I bought from Klapp as you can’t buy from the US anymore and anyway the Klapp price was as good as, maybe cheaper by the time you add shipping US to here. Tv I almost got locally merely for ease of possible replacement, but ended up getting it interstate off eBay. In both cases of course - warranty.

Also interstate is virtually the same thing as overseas when you’re in Tassie. Can be as expensive and as much of a pain.

I support local if they add something worth supporting. For me Gatti adds nothing, except more money. It’s a simple product. Very unlikely to need warranty, but if required I’ll send it back to Denmark. With Gatti I’d have to send it interstate. Six of one, half a dozen of the other. Sure, that’s a gamble, but one Im willing to take. Sounds like you’d prefer not to. I don’t think that’s a choice worth insulting someone over.

Picture quality is no different to xbox one s according to CNET. Looks like a lot of people on here are trying to justify their expensive habits

    • +3

‘From everything I could see’ is hardly a scientific method of assessing. Sounds like a Choice review to me. Sure, it’s a lot more money for a small improvement, but all A.V. or HiFi stuff is like that.

      • Have you tested them side by side? Otherwise I wouldn't believe any claims, humans are not good at discerning small differences when it comes to AV

        • +5

Exactly, which is why that CNet review is not useful. I'd rather trust Vincent Teoh or a similar in depth review as he actually 1. Knows what the hell he's talking about and 2. Measures stuff properly.

I haven't seen anything 4k (except stuff in store), but someone above just said they own both and the Oppo is better. There you go, if you want a non scientific, eyeball test from an owner to make the decision for you.

I do have an Oppo 93 bluray player and made my choice based on that and reviews. In retrospect, given Vincent's review, how much cheaper the Panasonic can be than the title price and that I have a Panasonic OLED coming, I might have gone for the Panasonic player over the Oppo.

        • @wfdTamar:

Vincent Teoh calibrates TV's, as a digital source should be unmolested before it reaches the tv.

        • Not sure of your point.

      • +1

More expensive TV's and speakers can provide a massive improvement.

If you can get me a 100" 4k TV's or full range, linear, phase correct, loud speakers with a low SNR in a package acceptable to my wife for $250 dollars I would love to buy some off you.

  • +3

I genuinely love my Oppo 203. I bought a multi region version from another store and I've never been happier with one player for everything in the world. 4k, SACD, DVD-A, Blu-ray etc.

I laughed at the Xbox review. A mate of mine plays video via his Xbox to his Epson projector and it's the most disgusting piece of crap Ive ever seen. It can't decode properly!

Aren't you better off with an HTPC at this price? I'm confused on why these are so expensive. Do people even use Blu-rays these days?

    • +2

Yes, you are confused young man! lol

      • -2

Netflix must be hard to use for some.

        • Some of us have crappy internet

        • @pasey25:

Back to the topic, why aren't you better off with an HTPC with a decent sound card?

  • I'm kinda waiting for a few more reviews of the BenQ W1700 4k projector before picking out a player to pair it with. I'm assuming this player is probably overkill for a budget projector.

    • I don't see the point unless you have the money to splurge, you're better off with a budget one and waiting a year or two when the prices of these go down by 80%

A great 4k HDR Bluray player with lots of backwards compatibility and audio format support at a nice price, currently about $95 cheaper than most discounted prices.

It might be missing Streaming options, but with most 4k HDR TV owners , their TVS would support a lot of those streaming formats anyway.

For ME there's something wonderful about playing a Blu-ray disc from a stand alone player, which I look forward to when I purchase a disc,
I personlly find the Xbox a bit clunky when playing Blurays, i currently run 2 players , a 4K HDR samsung and an OPPO 93 (mainly for SACD now)
but id rather have the 1 player, so will be happy to buy the Oppo 203 to replace both.. thanks again OP

    https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2017/04/oppo-udp-203-4k-blu-ray-p…

My favourite review is from Gizmodo , it also mentions the benefits of the Xbox , Samsung players as well as the OPPO but doesn't dismiss them as bad players, rather the opposite as they are not bad players at all, I know I have em both.

I particularly like that he mentions that an AV enthusiast would get the most out of this player, which Id class my self as.

I'm rather particiaular with what I watch and listen to my movies on, that's why id buy this player, but dont get me wrong, Ive torrented, and streamed lossy stuff and will still do, however, when a particualr title comes round, Ill grab the best version availble at the time and watch, and enjoy doing so , just as you may with what you watch your movies on whether it be torrented or streamed or whatever, thats whats so wonderful about technology at the moment, we have SO many choices, so many options.
Lets all enjoy all of our options , rather than judge people on their choices eh. This is ozbargain.com.au so let's be a bit more supportive.

I have 203. This is great price as I paid almost a grand for it.

  • Dam…love good HT setup, but just can't bring myself to spend $700+ on top of xbox just for a player.

Can you really tell a big difference in picture & sound quality?

    • +1

I bough this to replace my sony 4k player which is going back to Jb

I nneded a player with Atmos and it was between this and the panasonic 900 and there was only a $51 difference in price So I chose the Oppo and very happy

If you are happy with your player by all means keep it be it a sony or panny or xbox etc

      • Did JB provide a refund? I also have the Sony 4K player, purchased 3 days ago, which I’m a bit disappointed with when playing off USB - it doesn’t play files encoded with Atmos.

Would like to get the Oppo instead but I’ve opened the box of the Sony so assume JB won’t take it back?

      • Well, there you go, don't have atmos setup, so guess I'll just save my money then

  • +2

I have an X Box X the opp 203 and the UB900 and the oppo and UB900 have a significant better picture quality than X box..no contest. The oppo is a way better machine than the UB900 which is basically a blu ray player. The oppo is amazing with quality build..also you can attach a portable usb to 16TB to play movies/music in all formats. I have the WD 4tb portable passport attached and plays music/movies flawlessly. All other players/Tv's can only play up to 2TB. Definitely worth the money in my opinion

    • -4

      Calling bullshit.
The player just reads the 1 & 0 data on the disc combines it into a digital image for sending to the screen. There is no magic with this. It is a digital conversion. There can be no quality loss. The end result is the same.

Do you use $1000 hdmi cables as well?
