Unfortunately LG refuses to unlock the bootloader of these devices.

    http://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/RetrieveBootloader.…

    Only supported is:

LG V30: H930 and H930G for the European market

    • -2

this is not necessarily a blocker for installing lineageos though. just saying.

      • +3

You cannot install LineageOS on this phone unless the bootloader is unlocked or exploit is found to unlock it. V20 was hacked by an exploit but G6 only the EU and T-Mobile US models have LineageOS. There is not even ROOT for Aussie or Asian dual sim variant (like this one).

But of course this is a non issue if you intend to use stock and not care about being able to hack it.

        • What's the pro and cons of getting LineageOS over stock?

        • +3

          @wildstone:

Well its not even available for this phone. But the points of unlocked bootloader and custom roms like lineage are:
          * A cleaner user interface for those that hate LGs cartoony UI
          * Faster updates because you aren't waiting for LG
          * If and when LG stops updating the phone, you are able to keep getting updates thanks to dev community
          * Being able to ROOT the phone (You cannot root without an unlocked bootloader unless an exploit is found)

LG G3 which is a 3-4 year old phone now has latest Nougat nightly builds from Lineage OS https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/orig-development. I don't know if LG even provided Marshmallow for it. I am pretty sure it will get Oreo as well. There is already alpha quality Oreo builds for it here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/rom-linea…

        • @sylon:

Sorry I was asking specifically for V20. With V20 would Lineage have all the functions that stock has?

        • +1

@wildstone: You would get most of the functions, but generally with custom roms that are not based on the oem rom, you're likely to experience a reduction in camera image quality and you will lose features that are proprietary.

        • @ccsvchost:

Thanks. I suppose features like the second screen would be lost?

        • @wildstone: I remember seeing something about experimental support for the second screen before. I personally don't have a V20 so I haven't really followed that project, but I think you do get some basic use for the screen.

  • Damn i wanted this phone but no carriers have it

  • Good phone but people will still complaint about a flagship phone with 4gb ram.

    BOOTLOOOOOOOP

  • +5

On my list for 2018 but only if prices drop to below 500.

    • +2

hopefully. it is a LG after all

  • Is this the one with quad dac?

  • +1

Patiently waits for the L6 G6 to drop below $500!

    • +2

Worth noting that the G7 should get announced soon, making the G6 that bit more undesirable.

Also worth noting that the G6 and V30 don't have treble, which would make updates less certain/easy. Phones from 2018 should have it.

  • Honestly I would try get a Pixel xl 2 if you can for a similar price.

The only thing the V30 would do better is the Headphone jack, apart from that the Screen, Camera and Software are all better on the Pixel.

    • +2

      V30 has dual SIM.

    • +2

Pixel 2XL is at least $500 more.

      • There was a deal at JB for a Pixel XL 2 for $1099

Seems like this v30 is also Grey import too?

        • Good Point. still $250 more

    • +1
      • +1

Actually they're pretty similar now after Google released the more saturated colour mode.

They are both LG produced OLED screens so they're same-same but they both have their own issues.
Depending on how much you care about each issue the better display is pretty much whichever you prefer

    • agreed that the software in general is better on the pixel, the great folks over at xda-devs will have you sorted on the camera front. although the camera sensor itself is "better" on the pixel, you can achieve almost identical results in good light with the pixel camera port for HDR+ and portrait modes (google it and install at own risk). low light results can vary.

I ummed and ahhed a long time over immediate android updates for 3yrs plus unlimited g-drive storage and decided in the end these benefits were not worth the extra $$$ for me.

    • …..
      +
Dual sim, wireless charging, sd card slot, wide angle camera, water/dust resistant, aptx-hd Bluetooth.

    • +1

LG also has the sd card and the quad DAC and the water resistance and the wireless charging. I’d grab one if you could unlock the bootloader and get root (and if the screen wasn’t apparently a lottery)

  • -4

    3 Negatives:
    1. Made by LG.
    2. Over price.
    3. Bootloader lock.

    • Some of the negatives can be a positive "if" the unit is priced at $500 - $700.

    • +1

granted, the negatives you've listed are absolutely valid :) but how about all the positives?
      1. 128GB storage and top of the line specs
      2. one of the best screen to body ratios for a 6" screen (the whole thing is smaller than an iPhone 8 Plus).
      3. about $200-400 cheaper than an LG made Pixel 2 XL which has similar but ever so slightly less hardware features (wireless charging, dual sim, sd card slot, headphone jack), and there is a port of the pixel camera app available so you can even enjoy the HDR+ and portrait mode smarts from google.
      4. headphone jack with quad DAC
      5. wide angle camera option

a few additional negatives (full disclosure, this phone is my daily driver):
      1. LG interface is not the most universally liked, but i've been able to replace most things with alternatives (launcher, dialer, messaging and keyboard etc). other than the settings menu and notifications pane, i don't have to look at any other LG designed UI feature.
      2. screen does have blue tint issue like, but honestly speaking, who constantly uses their phone on an angle? it's a non-issue.
      3. there's a big ugly LG logo on the back, along with the power button, which is annoying as.
      4. updates will likely be slow-ish as with most vendors and will likely end within 2yrs (though Oreo is being pushed in Sth Korea as we speak), while google backed their pixel's for 3 yrs.

      jst some food for thought.

      • What Dialer app do you use?

        • i just side loaded the stock android dialer, can find a port quite easily.

      • How do you find the screen and the camera?

Basically, would you recommend this phone?

I really want the quad dac, however the reports of hardware issues is scaring me off.

        • unequivocally yes. the screen is great, and unless you have it side by side with a samsung amoled, it will be fine. the colour shift is there when you angle the phone, but as noted above, this is a non-issue. the camera is also surprisingly good, perhaps your pixel or iphone friends will try to shame you, but this thing holds its own quite well, especially with aforementioned pixel cam port. if you really want to 1up them, ask them to try take a wide angle photo…..

there have been reports of out-of-box screen issues locally where i am (SG), but LG has been replacing those. make sure you check it thoroughly, can use the service menu: #546368#930# for this model.

fantastic sound with normal buds, but where the quad DAC really shines is with high impedance cans (>150ohms), holy cr@p it's great, as it pumps the power output and sound stays cleeeeeeean.

  • Still waiting for a LG G6 h870ds unlock…….never going to happen

    Oreo update unknown as yet

Puts me off LG phones unfortunately
