Qantas (Qantas Frequent Flyer) vs Virgin (Velocity)

Hi all,

I'm currently accruing points on both my Velocity FF account & Qantas FF account and know that I'll get much better value from just focusing my efforts on one program.

What are your thoughts on the two airlines and their respective FF programs.

What is your current setup?

I fly a handful of times a year, but am nowhere near a "frequent flyer" (ironic I know)

So I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions.

:)

You'll get better value by taking the cheapest flight assuming the price difference is > $15-ish.

    • Interesting point.

I guess my end goal would be to accrue enough points on either program to redeem international business flights. That's where my rational for seeking better value came from.

  • Qantas is more premium imo.

    Better lounge and business class.

    • Yeah, from a points perspective Virgin definitely seem to be better bang for buck.

When you say premium, do you mean in service, aircraft or just in general because it's a more established airline?

      • Qantas have a better menu both in the lounge and on the plane. Seats have more space (at least I think so) in business. Tend to meet more famous people on Qantas planes in business class and in their lounges. My company also book all their airlines through their corporate account.

Both… One trillion points in one program is no good is availability is in the other program.

Eg. Have just booked a trip using QFF points flying Qantas, Cathay & Japan Air that had availability whereas VFF (and partners) had no availability on the dates I needed.

    • Good point, thanks for sharing!

Do you find it challenging chasing status in each program?

      • Never bothered chasing status as I don't fly on paid tickets enough to collect status.

Qantas is the best if your goal is simply want to redeem international business class seat in the future.
    1) It has more partners and you have a better chance of booking a business class seat for international flight. (only if you book early such as 350 days for Qantas flight or 2 weeks before travel for partner airline such as CX)
    2) There are more opportunities to accumulate points / top-up points when needed (so many credit cards offer Qantas point signup bonus)
    3) Qantas point has a higher value than Velocity point

Velocity is the best if your goal is to chase status.
    1) you could easily get to Gold status by family pool the status credits
    2) occasionally very cheap fare, definitely more competitive than Qantas (Virgin Australia has discount code pretty much every month or two)

The real question is whether you are flying internationally or just domestically? If international then Qantas and oneworld is a no brainer. If just domestic then perhaps virgin - depending on which service is more convenient for you.
