How Much Are School Fees (Public) ?

Hello, hope everyone is having a good start to 2017 2018.

I don't have any kids yet, but I'd like to have a feel of what it costs to have 1 kid. Specifically sending kids to public primary and secondary schools, in VICTORIA. I know prices will increase in the future, but at this point in time, what would it cost to send a kid to a primary school (year 4) and secondary school (year 10-12)?

I'm looking at just the entry fee. I know there're: uniforms, excursions/camps, equipments, uniforms!!, shoes, etc.

Any examples from your experiences?

Just for the fun of it, I also want to know schools in other states!

Thanks for the help in advanced.

don't worry, most people didn't pay their school fees at my school. for my school in NSW they were $50/year for K to 6, $100/year for 7 to 10 and $200/year for 11 to 12 but it depends on your electives. i don't think i paid them when in Canberra.

Fees are insignificant compared to food, clothes etc..

If you're not a citizen it can cost as much as $15k per annum.

If you're not a citizen or permanent resident […]

      • You have not have your kid yet so the kid can be a citizen by birth in Australia.

        • You have not have your kid yet

          Excuse me?

          @bozbargain:

Comment directed to OP as he/she has not have his/her kid yet.

        • @fullmetal87: :) Still, if OP is Australian or a permanent resident, his kids will be Australian. If he’s on a 457 or other temporary visa, his kids will be added to that visa (in which case they’ll be looking at $5k+ per annum per child in VIC).

        • not true. depending on the parent's visas.

  • High school was about $500 per year for me in W.A though you weren't obligated to pay it, but if you wanted your children to be able to attend out of school activities (excursions/camps, sporting events, school ball) they couldn't attend unless fully paid up. I thought that was a pretty clever idea.

    • Is this for public primary AND secondary?

Yeah I have heard the 'essential' part of the fee is literally for the teaching in school part only. The voluntary contributions are for the extra curricular things.

      Thanks!

That was for secondary which at the time was 8-12

  • "I don't have any kids yet, but I'd like to have a feel of what it costs to have 1 kid".

Time, health, sanity, money, the rest of your life! Kids aren't financial! the money is a tiny part of it!

I would guess our additional costs on top of the two of us with 1 kid would be about 20k a year in NSW for us at Public School. a LOT more for private or Temp Visas.

Clothes, School, Sports, Lessons, Food, Medical, Activities, Toys, Birthdays, Friends, Holidays, Everything else you can possibly think of)A million extra expenses.

Bank on a kid in Aus costing not shy of a million by the time they finish Uni for average middle income earners. The costs increase as they get older!

    • If they graduated uni at the age of 23 (being conservative) and you are saying a million.. Are you spending $43k/year on your children?

The cost of public schools is the least of your worries- a welcome relief from the cost of childcare.

    • Understand this first hand.. Currently being slaughtered by childcare for two kids.

Thanks for the super helpful comments from everyone! Yes I understand there are other costs involved, but for this post, I wanted to see what the costs for public schools are (primary and secondary). Seems like that shouldn't be a worry though.

    Citizen here!

    Thanks again!

    • Yes, very affordable public schools. However the quality varies a lot by area.

I used to spend more as a childless party animal.

Victoria is about $250 including stationary for primary school. It’s around $600-$1000 not including books or anything else for secondary college.
