DIY Dahua Security cameras around the outside of the house

Hi Ozbargain community

We've just had a break in and now wanting to increase the security of our house which is on a corner block. Since we're not very tech-savvy, we would like your advice regarding the brand/model of the security system.

The brand we're looking at is the Dahua brand but we're unsure which NVR and which camera models are good.

We know that we want at least 6 cameras so we need the 8CH for the NVR. We also want it to notify us on the phone.

Any recommendations?

    I've been doing a bit of research for the last few months and probably going to settle on this (NVR with POE - 8ch NVR with 6 POE cameras something like a 1TB or bigger HDD). eBay has 10% (targeted) discount running until 5-Jan-18 that has been applied to my account.

The cameras are the 'starlight' version meaning they have better clarity for night time/low light recording compared to IPC-HDW4431C-A camera. This particular seller is selling the international version NVR meaning firmware can be upgraded from Dahua. However the cameras are the Chinese version meaning firmware cannot be upgraded (which I'm fine with). For me this seller looks to be the cheapest.

    In terms of cabling, I'm going with 305M roll of cat 6 ethernet cable. I already have a rj45 crimper, rj45 punch-down tool, rj45 connectors & boot covers. I'm getting the 305M roll of cat 6 cable so that it can be run in a few other spots in the house as well.

      wow thanks so much for the info. we will have to do more research on this tonight and hopefully buy before the ebay 10% voucher expires.

        Yeah, no worries. I spent a good few months doing my homework online (thanks OzBargain!) as well taking to a few of my neighbours who also have this same system installed.

        It's good to pay a little extra and get a POE system. I opted for the 8ch NVR with 6 cameras for now as I plan to buy a few additional cameras later on once I have the money/find the cameras on sale.

        From memory, these cameras/NVR software also have facial & number plate recognition if you want to go next-level.

        I was originally planning on going with Hikvision system but it's out of my budget.

    The value of these things have dropped, but just be aware that a big security system implies you've got something worth stealing.

      I'm not worried about material things, I'm just concerned about my baby who's now sleeping in a different room from us. If possible I want to have good footage of these criminals to catch them in the act and prevent the same happening again to us or anyone else.

      Also, I'm on a corner block at a roundabout so we sometimes get a lot of hoons doing their thing at 2am waking up my baby. Would be nice to be able to get their number plate and report them.

    my neighbor had a very expensive 4mp white camera system installed in a corner house.
    One day in broad day light all his camera's around the house (with road access) got stolen
    by a man who brought a ladder & pinched them & he didn't even bother to cover his face.

        since its a corner block i dont think he even had to jump the fence to get to the back & side
        he reached for them straight from the side walk. But did walk up the driveway to snatch the front right.
        Cops were given a copy of the video but didnt get any leads.

      This is crazy as, people have no respect for society these days. I'm considering getting Dahua brand security system for my place, hence came across this thread. Hoping it's a worthy investment.
