Written off Car Insurance Claim Questions

Hey guys,
I have a few general questions on a claim ive had to make on my 1999 commodore due to the recent hail storm and would just like to know what to expect before i go in for the assessment tomorrow.. Policy is under dads name and he was in a rush and forgot to ask these questions (had to make 4 calls - 3 cars + house).

Just wondering if anyone knows if AAMI allows you to buy back your own written off car? And if anyone has a rough idea of how much it would be? (Cars insured for $3500. a lot of work has been done to it lately and its running great so id rather keep it for a while) I know if i buy it back i can only get third party - that isnt an issue.

And also if im unable to buy it back how long do you generally get to keep the car for once its been written off?

  • As far as I can recall (AAMI several years ago), if it's assessed as written-off you won't be driving it out of there and your insurance coverage will be cancelled. Insured value will be sent following excess payment. Don't know about buying it back sorry.

    • Ahh thank you! Guess ill have to get up early to take all the little stuff out before i get there!

Depends on your policy. I believe with AAMI it's an optional extra so you'll only have "salvage rights" to the wreck if your father ponied up for the higher premium.

    • Thats a shame, definitely would not have any added extras to the policy. guess i better start looking for a new car! thanks for the reply though :)

I went through this last week with aami.
Had my car assessed and the deemed it a total loss.
Was insured for $4000 and I bought it back off them for $400, allowed to drive but only third party insurance from now on. Your current insurance will stay until midnight of the day you see the assessors.
If you choose not to buy it back you have to leave it with them that day.
    Hope this helps

Thanks heaps, read your comment before I went in yesterday and it went as you said.
They had a buy it back price of $750 as it's still got 6 months rego worth $400, talked them down to $600. Going to get a new bonnet for $60 and fill the roof in and it'll be back to the way it was.

      Thanks again :)
