Do Parents Buy Spectators Tickets to Swim?

Hi there I am very curious if this is a very normal thing for local Australians? Why I am asking this question?

Today my family went to one swimming pool to get my son into VacSwim lessons. At reception we were told one spectators ticket must be bought along with one child's ticket. We actually planned to watch my son in rotation so both my hubby and I can get a turn to swim. We honestly told staff A that we wish to buy 2 adult's swimming tickets but no spectators. For quite a long time we were told their system didn't allow this because one spectator ticket must be sold with one child's as default. After another long time arguing with staff B, they sold us 2 adult's swimming tickets, one child's and no spectators.

It seemed to them my request is rare and our intention is quite strange. Well I don't believe 2 adults and one child all going to swimming together is something odd so does this mean lots of parents just simply buy spectators tickets to get in and swim too, as nobody in there checking what kind of tickets you hold anyway?

I am a migrant here so any local suggestion is appreciated.

OMG, is this for real? With your permission, I would like to include this tale in an audio book that I'm making for insomniacs narrated by Morgan Freeman and Noam Chomsky.

I use to take my son to swimming lessons at a pool, they never charged parents who weren't swimming but lesson were quite. My local pool charges admission for everyone including non swimmers. So I guess it depends on the pool.
