Dad and Partner Leave (Back to Work Earlier)

Dad and partner leave normally 2 weeks. I am thinking to go back to work after 1 week leave as there are lots of helpers (parents from both side at home ).

The question is:

  1. Will that be an issue with Centrelink as I am required to get 2 weeks unpaid leave?
  2. Will Centrelink ask for the money back for the one week that I am going back to work?

  • has centerlink already paid you ?

for question 1: you're entitled to 2 weeks leave, doesn't mean you have to take it in 1 shot. arrange this with your employer

centrelink paid parental leave has to be taken over 2 consecutive weeks (in 1 shot) if i recall correctly. Employer paid leave may be another story

      • I just re read it. You're right, got to take it in 1 go.

      • True it has to be 1 shot. My initial claim was rejected last year as I messed up the dates and returned to work a day earlier according to it.

Rang them up after I got the rejection letter and told Centrelink that I put wrong start date. I was asked to put a claim with the correct dates and I also made sure to advise my workplace what happened just in case they rang. Got it approved and paid soon after

  • 1.Yes potentially.
2.Talk to Centrelink about your situation.

If you’ve claimed 2 weeks then You must have 2 weeks unpaid leave and I do believe they need to be two consecutive weeks.

If you want to go back earlier then you will have to pay back centrelink for 1 week.

    • You are 100% correct.

Just stay home with mum and baby and enjoy the time

To be honest , In hindsight, I rather take my parental leave a couple of months after the baby is born.

The first 6 months the baby is just going to sleep anyway lol.

I were so ready to help the wife and then it turns out I just sit at home waiting for the baby to wake up :P

I might be wrong but I just finished my dad/partner pay and I believe you had to use it within 6 months of birth.

I feel like my 5 week old girl doesn't know what sleep is. I think you were lucky :)

to be clear it's within 52 weeks of your child being born or coming into your care as part of an adoption process

      • Someone I know did this. They had their baby over Christmas so were lucky with the Christmas period closure. Then took the leave in August to go on a holiday.

    • Great advice… will do it :)

Thanks all for the input.. after reading all the comments, im thinking to stay at home as being advice :)

  • I signed up for it today, I'm only taking a week and had to enter my date of return on the online forms. Log into My Gov and see if you can change it. Alternatively just have the week off, Otherwise it's $695 of your tax you won't see again.

  • Yes, if your wife is coping/has help now, it is probably better to take it when the baby is 6 to 12 months old, they are much more fun to hang around with at this age because they actually do more than eat and sleep and poop…
