Microsoft Complete Versus JB Hifi Extended Warranty

Assuming that the base cost of the Surface laptop is equal, would you purchase it through JB Hifi including their extended warranty program (4 years, $250), or would you buy it through the Microsoft site with their Microsoft Complete program (3 years, $149 - which includes accidental damage). I have home and contents insurance so accidental coverage is not mandatory.

Edit: I hesitate to purchase coverage through Microsoft because their service reps seem like idiots and I can't get a straight answer on some questions I had despite contacting 4 different people.

Vendor warranty over some 2bit retailers warranty that is provided through a third party.

  • The good thing with jb is, if they can not fix it, they give u a jb gift card to buy again.

  • Microsoft.

  • I would not recommend buying a Surface in the first place (I had no issues with dodgy firmware and bad ACPI power control with my Surface), but if you were set on a Surface, buy it through Microsoft. I had a Surface Pro 2 fail, sent it back to Microsoft (had bought through Microsoft) and had a replacement arrive very quickly. No doubt JB will turf you to an unknown third party provider should you actually need to call upon that extended warranty - and it would not be as good as accidental damage cover in any event.

    • The surface can be great, but yeah the firmware was shocking for ages on them. They have all settled down now, so thats good.

If you plan to do lots of typing, there are better units out there with better keyboards IMHO.

  • JB Hifi including their extended warranty program

But does product cover accidental damage? As the main thing that goes wrong with these machines is people break the screen!!

Plus they are not cheap to repair, so its a toss in the bin and buy a new one basically. Basically 70-80% the cost of a new one to replace the screen.

Source - We have a pile of broken ones at work!

I'm 99% sure JB extended warranty won't cover accidental damage, so go with the MS one.

I have home and contents insurance so accidental coverage is not mandatory.

Will it cover the surface? Out of home? If you drop it?

You will also need to pay your excess ($400/600/800 etc) and then declare an at fault claim for the next 5 years for any home insurance quotes etc.

    • Yes I pay for out of home coverage for my laptop, SLR and few other things. I cant remember what the excess is but it wasn't horrible…. I have never owned such an expensive laptop before. I normally buy Asus, but in the $1000 range.

Microsoft complete for Surface contains accidental damage for two years but the actual terms are not clear despite having a term sheet. I contacted 4 different people through their chat and got 4 different answers.

What are you not sure of then? Ask here and you might get your answer.

  • My Surface Pro 3 broke. The JB Hifi's warranty partner couldn't fix it. JB Hifi insurance gave me full refund in store credits.

The whole thing took a while though (2+ months) but I wasn't really chasing them either.
