Trying to get home & contents insurance - Need help!!!

Hi all,

Long story short, I have purchased a 5 bedroom 2 storey home. I will be renting the other 4 bedrooms to my closest mates that I have known for 10-15+ years (I'm 27) but everytime I try to get a quote online regardless of provider it says the following:

Unable to Proceed
Due to our underwriting criteria we are unable to offer you insurance at the current time. If you’d like to know more about other insurance options, you can contact the Insurance Council of Australia at findaninsurer.com.au

I spoke to a customer service rep at YOUI insurance and he informed me that because I have 4 other people living in the house that are not a blood relative to the owner (myself) then they could not provide me with insurance.
I have tried about 5 insurers so far (Budget Direct, Woolworths, Real Insurance, YOUI, Commonwealth Bank) and all of them say the same thing.

Is there any way around this or should I continue hunting for insurers? I really need help with this one.

Thank you in advance

You can try some of the mainstream insurers, EG, Allianz, CGU, QBE, Suncorp,
Failing that contact an insurance Broker.

  • Maybe try searching for renters insurance.

    • But the OP isn't renting…. I think you might mean landlord insurance ;)

I have tried about 5 insurers so far (Budget Direct, Woolworths, Real Insurance, YOUI, Commonwealth Bank) and all of them say the same thing.

Try some non-budget ones. They are BUDGET ones for a reason, as they cover fewer things.

  • I don't know the answer but maybe start with just home insurance, not home & contents. This risk they are trying to mitigate is theft of your property by people who have been let into the home.

I recently placed a home (only) insurance policy with Suncorp and I do not remember being asked if non-blood relatives would be living in the place.

    • This may work. Try not bundling home and contents. Do a quote for home then contents. I recently got contents only and wasn't asked anything about other residents.

An insurance broker will sort you out.
