Booking Air New Zealand Flight - Any Hacks as Opposed to Paying a Cash Fare?

I am looking at a direct return flight with Air NZ (Perth - Auckland) this year. Some queries if anyone can help:

  1. Before I book, I am wondering if there is any credit card deals that would be of benefit. Possibly ones which pass on sign up bonus points which could reduce my fare? Or maybe just some special service.

  2. Who is best to book through (with or without points)? I guess the Air NZ for a straight cash booking. However I tried using the Virgin site to see what points were needed but it seems all Air New Zealand flights state "Economy Reward Sold Out" - I checked right up till the end of the year. I envisage you cannot book Air NZ flights using Velocity points on the Virgin site?

Cheers

If you don't end up using points check the flight on iwantthatflight.com.au, I have found that fares can be a decent amount cheaper through an agent rather than going direct with the airline.

  • what about booking Virgin flights? I wonder if they codeshare.
Edit: maybe Virgin don't do direct flights. My bad.

I wouldn't recommend Air New Zealand unless it's significantly cheaper and you have travel insurance that covers emergency clothing.

I don't think I've ever flown with them. But yep, I always get TI. I actually hope my clothing gets misplaced as it did on a prior Jetstar trip to NZ. Waltzed in to a clothing shop in Queenstown and bought myself a $400 jacket which I was completely reimbursed for by TID and no excess. My bag turned up soon afterwards. 😁

I only want air NZ as it's direct.

I wouldn’t go anywhere international without travel insurance that covers emergency clothing irrespective of carrier. Lost bags for both passengers recently in USA on Qantas. Lessons were learnt that day about carry on having essentials like deodorant, chargers, travel adaptors and a change of clothes.

      • Get them back?

        • Yeah eventually. Was lucky.

      • My friends always wonder why I travel with so much carry on. They've never had their bags lost.
