[RESOLVED] Why Do eBay Deals Get So Many Votes in Such a Short Period of Time?

Stats on the latest 5% off deal show that it got 25 votes in 20 mins and the first 100 votes in an hour (currently at 300! Well above the most popular deals in the last few days) All the comments are either stating the fact that this is not a bargain* and being downvoted or are from new users saying generic positive things. eBay seems to have a lot of influence on ozbargain.

*5% off is usually the minimum discount offer with eBay and available >50% of the time. It compensates for the already 5% higher retail price from major retailers like dell etc

Edit: thanks for the responses. The consensus seems to be that ozbargainers really do love eBay that much more than all the other deals. It also appears my judgement about the utility of the deal was misguided and the 5% off coupon is a very good deal

    How…?

If you know how to properly bargain hunt ebay, you'll know that good guys, officeworks etc all list their products at the same price as in-store and on their own websites, so you get a further 5% off that

I tried that, but the OP didn't listen, decided to make a forum post instead.

        Yeah I just saw this:

You need to declare if you are associated in any way with ebay, which I assure you many of these upvotes are.

Crack pipe needs to be put down

        • +2

          It sure cracks me up.

        • -2

Instead of attacking me how about you justify the popularity of the deal? The 5% off office works sounds good, but since this happens regularly how come people get so excited for it? It outpeforms any other deal posted on here. Including any of the actual office works deals posted

          @Brucelamao:

          Are you jealous?

It's a further discount, a way of people saving money. Generally speaking, saving money is a good thing around here 😉

        • @Brucelamao:

You sound like you're associated with a non-ebay store, given your grievances with the post…

        • @Spackbace: I can see how it probably comes across like that. But genuinely I'm annoyed from a bargain hunters perspective about the possibility of manipulation on ozbargain. It turns out I'm likely wrong and ozbargainers really really like eBay. Or alternatively the coordinated downvotes against me by yourself and your friends could also give the appearance of being affiliated with a store

As the OP seems to have his answer to his question, I'll mark the topic as resolved. Please don't accuse others of being reps when they are not. Use the report button if you want Mods to investigate.

          Thanks guys.

          @Brucelamao:

Feel free to work out my affiliations from my 1285 deal posts.

Or y'know, just take my word for it?

We're not coordinated in our neg voting of you, we just collectively don't agree with you, big difference.

Ozbargainers like a bargain, and we up vote bargains, and we did

    Not everybody buys overpriced Dells.

Bargains are to be had on Ebay, combine that with a further 5% off and CashRewards and the large percentage of Aussies that shop on Ebay are getting an even better deal.

eBay seems to have a lot of influence on ozbargain.

eBay is one of the largest online 'marketplaces' available to us so any discount that is found will be very popular. The fact that you can search for and buy almost anything you want on eBay makes it more appealing to people than say, 5% off at EB Games or Harvey Norman.

It compensates for the already 5% higher retail price from major retailers like dell etc

Care to come back with proof? Blanket statements like this without examples don't really help your case. Yes of course there are retailers who jack up prices especially during the 20% off sales, but I'd say a good amount of sellers do the right thing. And since there are likely to be heaps of people selling the same thing, just do your own research on where the best prices are and 'vote' with your wallet.

If you don't want to see any more eBay deals, **you can do that too!

OP hates eBay, but loves Shopmonk

Not sure if they know how to apply common-sense

    • The proof is pretty well documented. Check any previous eBay 10-15% off post. My question is why does this somewhat regular and small deal get such fast upvotes. Thanks for your response. It probably is because many of the ozbargain are eBay shoppers regularly

      • +1

10-20% off sales involve the store themselves paying for part of the discount, hence price jacking occurs.

5% off is fully covered by eBay

        See the difference?

eBay is more than shopping at the big retailers. I often get tech near or brand new for a good price or find bargains in obscure categories. I'm a video game collector and many of the regular sellers allow you to make an offer. I often knock a few dollars off in combination of the 5/10% off and end up getting a great deal.

My advice is that you'll never truly see eBay as a bargain if you treat it like Hardly Normal.

For what it's worth, the 5% coupon works for both Buy it Now and Auction formats, meaning that it not only works for new items but also used items that you wish to buy from small eBay sellers (not just retailers).

It's a useful general purpose 5% discount for almost any seller on eBay.

    • +2

Thanks for your response, I didn't realise it worked on auctions. That's actually pretty good to know! Cheers

Upvote to OP for taking "you're wrong" so positively.
