Westfield Gift Cards - Gaming PC

Hello Ozbargainers,

I'm seeking some advice regarding Westfield gift cards and purchasing a gaming desktop.

I recently received a few Westfield gift cards from a client and was thinking of upgrading an old pc and purchasing a new gaming PC with these gift cards (plus a little big of cash where necessary.

I live in Brisbane QLD and so I'm getting the impression that I'm quite limited with my purchasing options at Westfield for my PC requirement. I know that purchasing a pre built PC is expensive and you get a fairly average product for a high price. Are there any stores that would be able to build me a PC and accept gift cards that you know of?

I would purchase something from MSY or Umart but am obviously restricted by wanting to use a Westfield card. I've been looking at spending between 2-3K for a gaming PC and possibly purchasing a wide screen predator or Alienware monitor from somewhere like JB hi fi.

Does anyone have any recommendations to get the best value for money for my purchase considering my restrictions and trying to avoid dipping into my own pocket so to speak?

Also would welcome any advice on what sort of PC I should/could purchase?

Cheers!

If you are set on buying a gaming PC, I would sell those gift cards for like a 5% loss or whatever you can get for them. Take that cash to a MSY or Umart. The loss from the sale would be gained back by avoiding the stupid prebuilt machine prices. The fact you even considered an Alienware item concerns me with your knowledge of PCs.

Side Note: Gift cards are not a good gift people! Cash is accepted everywhere and doesn't have an expiry date.

    • haha the side note is gold… unfortunately it's a gift from a client and its one of the only ways they can give a gift as they cannot directly pay in cash without an invoice etc… and gift cards are also tax deductible… etc

I'd be more then happy to sell at a 5% loss… problem again is finding someone willing to purchase bulk gift cards….. unless you are?

with regards to the Alienware monitor, i read somewhere the other day that the monitors were better then the predator ones.. i'm open to suggestions on this as well..

    • Also, what’s your suggestion for a monitor, a top 5 perhaps?

      • What is your Budget for the monitor? Do you want 1080p, 1440p, Ultrawide, 4k. What type of games are you playing? Do you plan to do photo editing. What GPU are you planning to use? There is heaps of variables when it comes to building a computer and most of it is either budget or purpose driven.

        • well i'm thinking the predator to be honest. I've got Samsung curved 32 inch i think.. it was 600-800 maybe. games are likely just to be nothing super intense, lol, pugb, anything else i download at the time… then a bit of media and general office work on it also. my pc rig is from 2007 now.. only upgrade GPU and ssd in it and it's ok.. but with the cards i figured i'd upgrade to something to last another 5-10 years. I've got a 55 inch 4k TV next to it with a ps4pro. Gotta get rid of these cards first. in terms of GPU i'm not sure yet… maybe a 1070 or 1080. still doing a bit of research. i'm OS till next week anyway so just reading up on it when i can.

        • @iLLusiveJebus: sorry 27inches.. not 32

Can you use giftcard for groceries shopping at Westfield centres (Coles, Woolies etc) then use the cash you would’ve spent there to buy the PC?
    Effectively giftcard -> cash.

    • Hi Zonra, thanks for the response. Yeah, it would take me quite a long time to spend this amount on groceries and would be pretty inconvenient as the closest Westfield is 30+mins away from where i live. I'm also a little impatient and want to spend the bulk of it quickly. I had a friend tell me that they used to get them as a gift from clients and they used to get the prepaid visa cards from woolworths but i don't think they do this anymore… which sucks as it would solve all my issues.

    Sell the gift cards
any gaming pc you could buy would be built for about half the cost that any rip off big store would sell it for.

    • Would do so happily…. unfortunately I think gumtree would be the only soloution… people on gumtree suck. :(

Try if you can use the card in the store. Some of the Westfield ones (eftpos) an be used anywhere but Westfield doesn't tell u this.

    • Has this worked for you before? I think they’re just standard Westfield cards…
do you know anywhere where this has worked for you?

  • there is a place that operates out of one of the westfield shopping centre close to brisbane " northlakes". their prices are pretty inflated though you might be able to get some sort of deal out of them. also harvey the shit hole norman do sell some parts but they might ask for your left nut aswell as the gift cards. as other suggested maybe take the 10% loss and resell the cards you will probably make up the loss by being able to buy from umart of msy etc.

itshop apparently these guys are at carendale aswell… tbh no clue but might be worth a look.

    • Happy to take a 10% loss on the cards but feel like gumtree is going to be a tough horrible slog to do so.

      • Try advertising on the classifieds here but yea it’s going to suck for the volume you are talking about.

  • The Westfield gift cards (standard red ones) definitely work outside of the centres. I used mine at a suburban hairdressers, they code as eftpos cards.
