Microsoft reveals how Spectre updates can slow your PC down

In case you haven't been following tech news, Microsoft Corp. has released some details about how the recent CPU Intel bugs can be patched and how the patches might affect your PC.

Here's a very quick summary.

  • It’s bad news for older Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines. According to Verge, "Most users" will feel the performance impact. If you're using an older system with an outdated copy of Windows 7 or 8, take note that upgrading to Windows 10 is still free..

  • Windows 10 users with 6th gen or later Intel CPUs should be fine, with less significant, "single-digit slowdowns"

  • Windows 10 users with 4th generation Haswell or older processors are hit with a slightly more severe decrease in performance. Actual figures unknown.

And that's it for tonight.

phew, I just bought a 6th gen Intel ultrabook today.

  • having read the article I find it amusing that they start off by using OS as the way of categorising.

I fall into the "Haswell and older running win10" category - having a near ten year old PC.

Good news is I can get a direct replacement CPU for $14, wtf?

    • You can get a Sandy Bridge era dual core for that sort of money.

I recently bought Pentium G850 + 4GB RAM + Basic LGA1155 Motherboard for a total price of $60. Which totals an improvement of 27 percent in geekbench versus the old Core 2 Duo E8500.

  • Hmm will I finally have to replace my 6yo Zenbook?

  • Crap I'm on 4th gen. More reason to upgrade I suppose.

Thankfully I'm not a Ubuntu user that had their update brick the entire OS.
